Hey Irie I dont have an excuse like indian heritige like you, its unfair that people who have 1/8th indian in them can have long hair for that reason. Although sometimes in his life IRIE has had up to 100% indian inside him if you know what I mean.:Q

skywhr, I am proud of my Indian heritage but when you say it sounds dirty, and I don't think I like it so kindly refrain from it. BTW I am 5/8 Indian (Ojibwe from Minnesota, Chippewa to the unenlightened) did you know that Ojibwe means True People in my language?

Coming from somebody who doesn't have a mortguage, gas bills, water bills, electric bills, telephone bills, property taxes ,car loans, students loans, bills for the kids braces, dues for kids hockey etc etc. Family comes first and then yourself which means whatever it takes. Lots don't have the luxury to become educated, thats really expensive too, and for most workadays its do whatever however you can.
Its pretty easy to be idealistic when you don't have to deal with reality that for poets and fools not family men. School is about as far away from real life as you can get.

what does that have to do anything? I live alone pay rent, all the fixins, car paymnets, insurance and all that.. Im in some major debt right now. and this is coming from somoeone who has lived in poverty all my life, up until now, dont tell me about reality. But i dont let that consume me, anyways thats not the point... if someone said.. ok cut your hair for a million dollars, id say go for it.. it will grow back and the intentions of the haircut are different.. but if someone wants you to cut your hair to fit the image they have of what a good worker is, well thats your choice, but im not gonna encourage doing so.

So the answer is yes to the original question.
If they tell you to cut your hair and you want to work there for any of the many reasons posted why.

Sorry but I am an indiviual, not because of my appearance. Apparently you've lost what made you individual somewhere along the way, guess Im lucky...
Oh and if pissing in a urinal rather than on you or a tree or on my leg makes me conformist then yeah I guess in that way I conform, or is that just common sense. Your making the most common everyday task a conformity, I breath the same as most ppl am I comforming because I dont hold me breath between each breath for 10 seconds just to be different. Someone said something about conforming. I think people also grow their hair, peirce their bods and tatoo for conforming to "peer standards". In a way that's kind of sad to see it done for those reasons. I believe that most of those who do that when they are young will feel differently about it when they mature. My own son wanted to do some of that when he was 16. I sat him down and asked him to wait until he was about 20 years old, then see if he still wanted to. He has now told me, he is glad we talked about it because he now has no desire to get a tatoo and would have regretted it later.
This time I told them that I wasn't going to because I knew I was no longer expendable

whatver people... you continue to live in the WE world that you speak of... you obviously havent had the experiences of purenss with ones self... you cant take conformity on a point by point basis, its a state of mind.. and dude whatever.. just because your kid changed his mind dont mean sh!t.. possibly he is somewhat trendy, which we all are at apoint, but dont let his situation be the judge for all.. Ive had my lip pierced since i was 16.. 5 years and it has become part of who i am. That really has nothign to do with this, but I just get aggravetd at the ignorance of people.. people that get pissy when you dont live in the WE world that they do.. money this and money that.. you make consisous choices to buy the finer things therefor making your bill higher, but that ok, i know thats a prt of the WE lifestyle.. but when the time comes and you have to decide to jepordize your identity becuz of those comitments, realize that you do always have a choice.. its possible to live a life with a famliy based on love, where you still can support them, but maybe not surround them with some luxorious.. but when the love is true.. that is all that matters.. and the point of this is.. you have a choice... i really think the answer to the question is, its your choice.. in the purest form, IT IS YOUR CHOICE...

Consider this scenario; If you applied for a job (off the record, of course), the reason for not getting that job, may very well be that pierced lip. Do you think they are going to tell you that's why you weren't hired? No, you simply won't get the call back or get the job in many places. Again, people have priorities screwed up. Kids don't get what they could because dad had his hair too long to get a decent job or piercings, tatoos or whatever it may be? Doh! :Q
I personally witnessed such a person working in a restaurant. I said nothing, but you should have heard the comments other people were making. This person was scaring people's kids. The manager heard about it.
BTW, what makes you assume that all people who have something are in loads of debt?
Long hair is a phase most people grow out of, it's very easy to say you don't need "worldly goods" if you have spirit of the mind. Sound peachy now but I plan on having kids one day and providing them with a good start in life. I also plan on getting a house and put away enough to kick back around age 60. I'm pretty damn good at what I do but I am positive that my apperarance of being professional has done me a lot of good. I'm only 23 and don't cliam to know everything on life but I look up to the members of the board here with more experience. I alos talk to my dad. He too had the long hair but soon realized that he cannot "Par-tay" forever. He "sold out to the man" but did very well in life and is very happy owning his own business. If it worked for him, it's gotta have some basis in reality. As for "material things," hey I want to live comfortably. I knew a few people that didn't care for "stuff" and they live in ratholes in crappy neighborhoods. I've saved up a decent amount of money to date and hope to but a house in the next few years. Right now, I'll be content with my new, loaded 2001 BMW X5 4.4 which I'm picking up next week.

I became a systems administraor of a mid sized company with very long hair. Within 3 months of getting my first ever "business haircut" I got my first promotion and bump in pay, and within 8 months I got my second and am now earning about 23% more money than I was. I did not sell out I did what I had to advance my family, I still don't like politics, I never discuss religion, I still don't smoke or drink or imbibe in drugs, I watch the same TV shows and laugh at the same stupid ass things, I buy what I like and not what is "in". If I sold out I do not believe I want to be standing on the same side of the line as those who haven't sold out as they are a bit too hypocritical for my tastes, but wait I think that means they always were, eh? I guess I had to sell out to discover that, hmmmmmmmmm!
