Since nobody reads the OS forum..

download the bootvis.exe util from here

run it, and goto the "TRACE" tab, then click on optimize..

let it run for 5 or so minutes..

and watch your boot time be cut big time.....

Thats not half! ;)

I'll try it later to see if it makes any difference on my XP machine.

I frankely after upgrading from 2000 have seen an enormous speed increase, and I'm just gonna leave it alone. It's great

I've had it for a month now and have had it running ever since except for video driver updates. Only three boots.

boots in like 30 seconds or something ... but then i have to log in.. that takes a hefty amount of time... it's just SLIGHTLY faster than my win2k setup before. i'll give this thing a try and see what happens...

Interesting program. I ran it a few times, then told it to optimize. My boot times improved by 8 seconds... I'll take that smilin' :). Thanks for the links ieee.

Mine only takes 30sec to get to a loaded desktop (raid sequence adds about 6 sec), so this program will do it in 15? :Q

What do you mean, sure it is! It takes 40 seconds now and saved 20: 20/40 = 50%!!

hehe.

Mine always boot a little slower because my scsi controller scan for scsi devices. I will need to time it before and after to see any difference.

Some after-market stuff helps too. Like Ontrack's FIU has boot defrag, registry defrag and jet-defrag with intelli-cluster for smart file ordering.

Win2k has significantly reduced the amount of time I have to sit around waiting for it to boot...because I only reboot about once every 3 months. ;)

Sir Fredrick, that means you aren't installing and tweaking enough stuff ;)

Migrating completely to W2K from a dual-boot setup was like cutting a ball and chain off my leg. Keeping software up to date on two OS's on one PC was muy loco. Now, not having to reboot the main system several times a day because of bad memory management (Win9x) is kinda eerie.

Nah, I've upgraded and tweaked this pretty beast to death, the setup is virtually perfect, all 4 PCI and one (of two) ISA slots are filled, she's got a CD-R, a CD-ROM, and a DVD-ROM, as well as 3 internal SCSI drives (1@10k RPM and 2@7200RPM), 4 80mm fans, 2 PIII450s, 512MB of RAM...and about 15 external peripherals which I won't get into. :)
It's smooth and fast and responsive...I can't justify any more upgrades.
So instead I'm going to build a new computer so I can spend another 3 years tweaking that. ;)

Wow, thanks! 18.95 seconds for bootup on this laptop now. 27 seconds before the optimization. I'm pretty impressed by this utility. That's not too shabby considering the speed (slowness) of laptop harddrives.
