That might be a wise move for the U.S. in the long run. Pull a DeGaul - declare failure and pull out. Whoever's left standing in Iraq will still sell us the oil. Buying oil from the Kurds or the Shiites shouldn't bother us any more than buying from the Sunnis did.

Funny that the oilfields were in no danger of falling into the hands of islamist extremists before the invasion, but now they are, apparently...

The factions in Iraq and neighboring countries know it's just a matter of time before Uncle Sam declares victory and splits, no matter the reality of the situation. That outcome has been assured via the total incompetence of the Bush Admin. They've made every imaginable mistake, starting from the first one, the decision to invade.

If they're smart, and I suspect that they are, the Turks, Syrians and Iranians are planning on carving Iraq up into their own separate spheres of influence without having to fight among themselves to do it... all as a humanitarian effort to maintain order, of course, once the Americans are gone and their puppet govt crumbles...
