You should've never just sent it out in an envelope.

those things get processed through the machines nad probably got caught somewhere and ripped out.

I learned the hardway when I mailed a CF card like that.

Even if he had purchased insurance, I highly doubt USPS would have honored the claim...

Use better packaging.

Mailing it a regular envelope...? Not gonna cut it son. I hope you learn from this...

USPS PM w/DC works best. They also give you free shipping supplies.

It really doesn't make a difference. Just refund the money and chalk it up to experience.

either someone opened the envelope, too the card and resealed the envelope or the buyer is looking for a card and his money back.

in either case... you did not insure, so you have to eat this one.

sorry :(

DC would have made no difference here, but it is always wise to get it.

Why would he need to get insurance for shipping something. I mean you don't need insurance if you take something to the dry cleaners and they lose it, why should it be required for shipping?

He doesn't /need/ insurance..though it would possibly have saved him 40 bucks this time.

could he take the claim to small claims and if he could prove that usps lost it, he'd get his money back. I know for 40 bucks it wouldn't be worth it probably, but for a higher dollar item it'd be.

It would have been 39 cents, but there was a fee for the extra thickness of the evenlope (memory plastic case). A week later, the customer said he received an empty envelope. He said there was no damage done to the envelope. What should I do? There was no insurance for the mail. Should I refund him the $40?

EDIT: i forgot to mention; the envelope was taped on the seal.

EDIT2: i just asked him if there was a slit on the side of the envelope, and he said there was. he didn't notice the slit since it was so small. oh well.

You do not ship electronics/ system parts in regular envelopes..refund the man his money period, end of discussion.

Precisely. If it looks small, valuable, and easily pocketed, it's gone. Might as well mail cash in a ziplock bag.
Not to mention that an envelope provides no protection against rough handling. I don't care if it was in that little plastic memory holder thing. That'll only save it from very minimal compression forces. Boxes with some kind of packing material should always be used.

Do you trust the buyer? If so, at least report it to the USPS, tampering with the mail is indeed a serious crime and they'll investigate it / keep a record which may help catch someone who's doing that.

I'd wager the buyer is scamming though. Unfortunately you are still out the $.

Oh c'mon people.

Every day a thousand things more valuable than this guy's SD card are sent in plain envelopes via the USPS. Hell I have had someone send me two hundred dollars cash that way.

I hate to say it, but you're going to have to refund the money - however unless the buyer is a close personal friend of yours, I would have to assume that he's lying. Nobody slits an envelope and steals an SD card out of it - they'd just take the whole thing, or more likely, leave it alone.

Sounds to me like the buyer is taking advantage of your improper packaging, and saying it wasn't in there since there's no reasonable way for you to refute that it wasn't stolen.

are envelopes sorted by machines? perhaps the envelope was compressed and squeezed out. if someone was to steal the sd card, i'd assume they'd take the entire envelope, not just the sd card.

Agreed. An envelope is for paper. Period. Anything with any ridgdity will snap when going though a sorting machine anyway. Even if a USPS employee took it, it was probably already broken.

Boxes are for product, envelopes are for paper.

I get opened envelopes and envelopes with contents missing all the time. I suppose my local post office is especially corrupt or something. I very rarely get mail that disappears, however. If they take the entire envelope then they have to hide it/dispose of it. I hear the addresses are often electronically read as well, so there may even be an electronic trail for the envelope at some places and letting it continue would prevent that trail from stopping at the criminal.

That's bizarre - I've had 6 different adresses in completely different areas over the last 15 years and I've never actually lost anything via USPS. I have had 2 envelopes get mangled, but even the contents of those made it back to me.
