custom pc attempt 3

Let me know what you guys think , my budget is 700$ and that must include sales tax's and and shipping , this is the best i could come up with so far........i know the video card isnt the best in the world but i think its decent for a non-gamer like me........the only game i really play is age of empires 2 age of kings and that plays fines on my 8 mb onboard lol......

If you're a nongamer, that looks fine. All I'd recommend is getting a Western Digital SE hard drive w/ 8MB cache instead, it's worth the extra $10 or however much.

You could even get a cheaper video card if you don't game. The Samsung CDRW/DVD is great - just bought the same one a few weeks ago, very fast.

Looks good to me for what you are wanting. If you have more room to move the budget, consider that the cost of bumping the hard drive up a little more isn't that much. So, you could cut the video card down to say a PCI radeon classic for ~ $40 to give you an extra $20 on storage. Also, why the floppy drive? Thats $11 to save right there on an old, worthless peice of hardware 🙂

why bother with a 64 at all? i would go with a 2500 barton like i have, then if you choose to, oc it to 3200, mine is locked, but i bumped the fsb to 200 and it runs great! make sure to get good pc2700 ddr, like crucial, which is what i have....you could save a good amount of money that way and still have a very nice setup.

allanon1965 good idea...stealthbox you don't need an A64 if your not a FPS gamer.

Get a Mobile barton and set bus to 200 (all will make 3200 speeds, no exceptions) an a nice antec case and a LCD monitor for less than $700.

Motherboard- shuttle AN35N $50
Chip - Mobile 2400 $77
HSF- spreeze falcon rock $10
Memory- 512 MB PQI PC 3200 CAS 2.5 $65
Case- Antec SLK2600AMB $50
HD - Seagate 80GB $60
Videocard- ROSEWILL ATI RADEON 9600 Video Card $66
DVD/CD burner-Optorite 8X DVD+RW/-RW Drive Model DD0405, $50
LCD-Rosewill R700J Silver 17" Active Matrix LCD 16ms Monitor with Speakers - $236

Tota $664 + 34.60 shipping

Much better than both because you get crystal clarity of LCD, a DVD and CD burner for backup, and a nice case and PSU.

I'd prefer a good 15" LCD to that 17"...
Probably a case with a better power supply also, but that's just me.
And maybe a brand name DVD burner - the NEC 3500 is only slightly more.

I think you'll be plesanty surprised by roswills 17" LCD because it has extremely good response time using LG/phillips panel (same as in dell viewsonic and others). Look there only like 3 makers of panels Rosewill is an unknown so they are trying to breakin on price but still using quality. Second is even the cheapest LCD looks better than 90% of CRT's. You need a diamondpro to come to their level. Third is the esthetics on the monitor is very nice. Small bezel and thin.

I really appreciatte all of your help .......everyone feel free to post your opinion as i can use as much advice as i can get

That'll make a fine computer for playing RTSes. I have something similar, and it's enough for me at the moment (haven't found myself playing many games, much less even OCing the proc--it's sitting at 133 FSB as I speak!). Try a 9600 XT or 9800 if you think you may want to move to slightly more system-taxing games in the near future.

And yes--make sure you get a quality case like that Antec (I saw that Rosewill on your Newegg list... for cases, that brand's a no-no--generic PSU, though my Rosewill 9600 has had no problems). I have a larger one, the SLK3700AMB, and it works beautifully.

ive been told by everyone that those antecs cases are awesome, and while i believe it i just think those cases are so ugly lol i can always buy a better power supply
