custom computers OTHER than dell?

Hey,

I am trying to design a computer online for a friend. He wants to have warranty support, but doesn't want to get a crappy Dell computer.

So, we found this place sysbuilder.com, that you can create custom gaming machines.

Does anyone know if this is a reputable place, or know of any other online stores that allow full customization + warranty?

This computer will be used mainly for gaming.

Thanks,
-Adam

Get an asus machine although I'm not 100% sure that asus builds are ATX Comliant/standard, I think they are and completly customizable. There are other companies like Falcon Northwest and Voodoo PC that I know of. Otherwise I consider building the machine my self and when a part goes bad, you just RMA the part. For how ever long your parts are warranted for is essentially your own warranty for the computer.

Enjoy!

so build it for him yourself. tell him that with the money saved if anything ever does go wrong the piece can be replaced and still be cheaper than premade

Some people just don't want to do the tech support for another, even when it's a friend. Besides, many people including myself, don't like the hassle of an RMA so they would rather have a "Dell" handle all issues.

letsgetsilly, you didn't indicate the budget. Alienware, Falcon Northwest, and Monarch computers could be a start.

Doesn't really matter for budget anyways because alienware is now making reasonably priced pcs with not that bad specs. But I hear alienwares always run hot, then agian I'm sure its not hotter/louder than mine or my friends athlon system. Mine is loud, his is a propeller plane taking off and if you have not been near one taking off then you dont know what loud.

afaik, dell support is still better than falcon / alienware

Christ no, Compaq and HP are so bad they make even Dell look good. They come installed with spyware now, I read an article on it on the last page of PC world and was left dumbfounded :Q

<obligatory urging to have him build his own>

If he insists on buying a prebuilt, ABS and Monarch are supposed to be pretty good.

Thanks for the info guys

As far as budge goes, we'd like to stay below $1000 without a montor. Which I know leaves room for a very decent gaming computer if self built, but I have heard Alienware is expensive. I will have to look into it more.

Also, a couple of questions: I'm planning on waiting around a little bit until the ATI x700's are more widespread, and then getting him an AMD64 board. Any complaints with that combo?

Thanks again,
-Adam

Another note-- I just checked out ABS computers, and they are a bit too expensive.

Ideally, I'd like a place that allows you to pick every component, and choose against purchasing software (including OS) if possible. We don't need it.

sysbuilder.com is the only place i've found so far, still looking for others.
