its a pretty good motherboard. I do like it a bit more than my p3v4x.

However, cost is pretty high, and you can get the MSI 815Pro for $120 at PC Club. From what I hear, the MSI is also an excellent board.

Another interesting i815 Choice would be the new abit Sa6r.

I had the Abit SE-6. I couldn't return it to the store fast enough!

I now have a CUSL-2, and think it's an awesome board.

Does the i815 series chipset require drivers to be installed?

No, but I heard that you'll need to install some drivers to activate ATA100 in Win2k.

I have nothing but good things to say. Im overclocking a p3 700 currently and have an ibm ata100 hard drive and after I booted up the first time I haven't had any incompatabilities or wierd crashes, hangs, etc. I can shutdown, restart, use usb devices just fine with win98se. Ive been using the board for a few months now.

i am however dumping this setup for a kt7 and 1ghz tbird to try and overclock as soon as the piece of crap retailer deals wity my rma. I could only get my cpu to about 914mhz stable that I could tell and I want 1.2 ghz :)

Got to be honest with you I think it is the best most stable mobo that I have ever seen. I have one that I put together about a month ago and haven't seen a blue screen yet. I am running a 700e at 933 rock stable. Software seems to jump on the monitor screen when you click everything seems to have a jump that I have never seen before Awesome!! Would definately buy one if you are in the market for a 815e chipset mobo.

If you take a look at my setup below you can see my system pretty much sucks except for the video card. But i've been buying parts for a computer i am going to build myself when i get the time, and one of the parts i ordered was the CUSL2. I have heard very few bad things about the mobo in the forums, and as far as professional reviews go, i havent haerd any bad things. AnandTech has reviewed probably close to 100 mobos, and i've taken a look at most of them...i have yet to come across a review that gets a higher rating than the CUSL2. i especially like the fact that its the only i815E board that can run all three DIMMs @ PC133 cas2 without sacrificing stability. now i would never need to use all three DIMMs, but the above fact only makes me feel that it will be even more stable b/c i'm not going to be pushing the board to its very limits.

remember, i'm in the same boat as you...i got the board b/c of all the outstanding things i've heard about it...i havent actually used it yet.

if you are interested in Intel's new chipset, the i815EP, ASUS is now producing the CUSL2-C, which uses this new chipset. it is almost exactly the same as the i815E, but without onboard video (which nobody uses anyway) and supposedly supports up to 1.5 GB of SDRAM (unlike the CULS2's limit of 512 MB of SDRAM). in fact, you dont have to wait to get it anymore...there is a post somewhere in AnandTech's forums thats says a place in NY is selling the new board...

With comments like,

<< Best Mobo I have ever owned.. >>

<< the best most stable mobo that I have ever seen >>

I had to get one, ordered a CUSL2-C from that joint in NY, 140 shipped. I don't put too much stock in mobo reviews because it's simply impossible for the reviewer to test every possible scenario, but a combined pool of endusers can give good insight on how the product really is.

I was thinking about a duron/KT133 platform, but everyone and their mothers seem to be having one weird problem or another with that kind of setup, and I want my next system to be as stable, robust and as little of a pain in the ass as possible. Performance doesn't matter if the computer doesn't work right :)

OuterSquare:

That is true...the opinions from many end users is also what i based my decision upon. But i thought since everyone here are basically end users with opinions, an outstanding review by AndnaTech itself might help you in your decision (only b/c AnandTech pushes the board to the limit in its tests, and most users will not push the board the same way AnandTech did, so its bound to run even more solid with an end user than it did during rigorous testing). but there is no doubt that the opinions of many end users is the best way to get info on the performance of a widely distributed product.

I went with the MSI 815 board.
Great board.
At one point I thought the board was a problem and was going to replace it with a CUSL2.
But decided against because of the price.
140 has got to drop.

It's the best board man.

Yeah, I leave my computer on the net all the time, and with Win2k it had never crashed once throughout the time that I leave it on (and I leave it on 24hrs a day 7 days a week). ABle to overclock my 700e to 875 at 1.75 :)( got dud cpu)

Simply the best board.

Think about it, the CUSL2 might be a little high in price, but your entire system's stability pretty much depends on the mobo... so it's worth spending on the mobo and skimming on something else :D

If u check out Anand's reviews you'd see board like MSI will have great stability, and as a side note it says it only crashed twice in a day... but the CUSL2 is ROCK SOLID. I mean, if u wanna save the $40 on something else u can, but that depends on whether you want quality and stability.

Good products always cost a little more :D

I have a pair of CUSL2 from two different vendor and it runs superb with a g400 dual, a 3d prophet geforce sdr, a cl tnt2 ultra, voodoo 3.

I have no problems with scsi, adaptec 2930u2; 2940u2w

I'm using max of 256x2 - 512mb crucial pc133 7.5ns RAM

This board has been rock solid..

I even like it more then my 2 yr old bx6r2 and that guy is still GREAT!

After all the BIOS updates, all of my problems have been ironed out with the exception of cold boot drive detection.

My board sometimes has problems detecting my ASUS 45x CDROM and Yamaha 4416E CDRW on a 40-pin cable on the secondary IDE port. A reset will fix the problem.

also go to www.cusl2.com for great tips and help in the forums section. It helped me with my SQ2500 soundcard trouble and the video trouble after flashing the bios. it is all working sweet as pie now.
