CUSL2 temperature problems

I have the strangest probs with the CUSL2. When I first put together the system:
AOpen maxi tower 300W
CUSL2
PIII 733MHz
256Kb PC133 memory
SB Live
IBM 30.7 GB ATA100
Plextor CDRW
Pioneer DVD
USB optical mouse Logitech
the BIOS showed the CPU temp to be 80 Celsius! The processor did not seem to be running hot so after some fruitless trials I took the mobo back to the shop. They put a brand new mobo and tested it without actually installing it and the temperature readings were OK. Then they inserted the mobo and tightened the screws and the temperature readings were back at 80. They're now trying to solve the problem, but that seems mighty strange, as if the stress of tightening the screws had caused some bad contact? Anybody heard of anything similar?

what BIOS version do you have? did you try using Motherboard Moniter and see what readings it gave?

That's a weird problem. Try CUSL2.com. Your problem is the opposite of what should happen. BIOS version 1.001 gives low temp readings. Maybe you should try a new BIOS version?

This may not be that weird. What heatsink/fan are you using? When I first installed the Alpha on my P3-700, I tightened the retaining screws of the fan too much and actually push the heatsink away from the die. This results in very little or no contact with the CPU and I got a runaway heat problem. Fortunately, I turned off the power to the computer quickly and got the problem fixed by loosening the screws sufficiently.

I agree with HD2go. I eyeballed the distance the bolts/screws went BEYOND the heatsink on my Alpha PAL and it was too close for comfort. So, I ground off a few mm. It looked like they would extend beyond the "feet" on the Alpha and lift the heatsink off the cpu.
An alternative would have been to loosen them, but they felt too loose when I did that.

The heatsink wasn't touched between the time the check was made outside of the case and when it was inserted into the case; only the screws holding the mobo to the plate were tightened. I'm using a standard heatsink which is just clamped, no screws (I'm not overclocking). I tried a new BIOS and a new PC Probe version but that didn't change anything. The processor was also swapped. Looks definitely like a mobo problem, but a generic one.:disgust:
