Currently what is the best car audio head unit?

From $200 and down. I want it to power 4 Infinity Kappa 3-way's. Think I will need a real small 4 channel amp to boost the wattage?

I have to pick one out because I need to order it, get it, measure it, then send off the measurements to get my new dash machined 🙂

I want to know as well 😀 Maybe sub $300 for myself. My Pioneer Premiere(sp?) is dying :x Sometimes the screen goes out and I can't use any buttons, or the face plate will randomly fall off 😱

Please dont drive Kappas with a HU 🙁

As for the best HU? Denon, but you cant TOUCH one for under a grand, and the high ends are well over 2. McIntosh would also be a good candidate for best.
I personally think Eclipse is the best though. Eclipse OWNS YOU! Although, there HU's start around 250. Worth it though.

You get what you pay for, and I think that for $200 you will get a POS or close to it. Are you planning on building a system or just adding this for your last thing?

You can get decent HU's for under $200.

Noooo, you'll need to run those Kappas off of a real amp. What size are they? I have Kappa 652.5i's (6 3/4in) in the rear of my car, and Kappa 60.5cs components up front driven by a 4 channel 75W RMS amp, and they could still use more power...my amp was cheap (Autotek SS400.4), and I dont think it's putting out what it's rated. For kicks, I tried powering my rears on my head unit, which does 25x4 RMS and 50x4 peak...it was sad. At least half the volume, and much less sound quality (lacking midbass).

$200 isn't a lot to work with if you want a nice head unit. I'd recommend saving up a bit more and getting something good.

sounddomain.com has a good fs/ft forum...you could probably find something pretty decent for 200... but I agree that you should run an amp on those kappas.

decent hu's that have good features and mp3 playback? I would certainly like to see quality ones for under $200.

Look at the Pioneer DEH-P5500MP. Thats a great unit for under $200. Don't listen to others saying you can't get anything good for cheap. As long as you get a decent amp to power your speakers........you'll have something that sounds pretty good. Look at also clarion.......there are plenty to choose from.

Well, howabout a max of $300 and two kappa's. Do I still need an amp? If i get a HU with maybe 50 ish out will they be fine?

BTW they are 6X9's.
It doesnt have to be GREAT but decent. Its a 75' Scout II afterall.

I was looking at this alpine before. Can it power two kappas well? I mean I can always save for an amp later.

Where did mp3 playback come into the question?

I just bought my girlfriend a Pioneer 7500 for Xmas. MP3 playback, XM ready, OEM display. I like it. Not as much as my Pioneer 8400, but its a good deck either wya.

I believe it came into the question based on the fact that when spending $200 ( a lot of money in my book), you want as many usable features as possible. I wouldn't even think about buying a head unit without mp3 playback capability. I think it's a gotta have.

I guess I got ripped off then. I put down $600 on a HU and have no mp3 playback.

You didn't get ripped off.. i guess you didn't require mp3 playback.. that's cool.
