This is just my little moan, rant, and b_tch about one of my current jobs. I'm a student at the State University of West Georgia (never heard of it, not a huge school, but it's getting bigger) and I work two campus jobs for the school. At one of my jobs I'm a computer lab assistant and work in two general usage labs, this is for the Arts & Sciences Information Technology Services Department of campus. At the other job of mine I'm (well was... let me finish) a networking student supervisor, this is for the main Information Technology Services Department on campus. These are two different departments one being normally called A&S Tech Support and the other being normally called ITS. Now I've been at this school since January 1999 and I'm gonna give you a layout of my work here on campus:
Jan 1999 - Began working for ITS
July 2000 - Quit working for ITS
Jan 2001 - Began working for A&S
Jan 2002 - Re-Hired at ITS, still working at A&S
That's the basic layout of my hiring and work here on campus and here's where my ranting starts off. Like I said I was re-hired at ITS in a networking student supervisor position with two newly hired students under me (one male, Adam Sewell, qualified more in networking and databases and one female, Andrea Collier, qualified in telephone equipment and services). I was sought after for this job because I've previously worked for ITS here on campus. I was hired in at $7.50/hr and the two students were hired in at $6.00/hr due to our qualifications. The reason for me leaving the first time was due to my boss. Since I began working there my boss, Vedat Gunay, didn't like me and didn't trust me, for what reasons I'm still unsure of but all of faculty constantly told this to me. After putting up with him for a year and a half I decided to just quit and be done with him and ITS.
The reason I went BACK to work with ITS was for that $7.50/hr pay AND that I didn't have to report to Vedat Gunay because I was working directly for the telecommunications area of ITS which is under the direction of John Stogner. After doing our job for about a month and a half (and doing it so effecient that we're ahead of schedule by three months) we hear on one friday by our boss that our pay rates were being reduced down to minimum wage (here in Georgia that's $5.15/hr). Now here's where all the bullsh_t comes into play. We were told that the reason our pay was reduced was due to "fairness to all student assistants" and we were told that the student assistants of Vedat made the complaint, bullsh_t. I later found out that it was Vedat, ofcourse, who made the initial complaint of our pay rates and b_tched and complained that his students didn't like it.
Now I don't know about you but I've always thought that people aren't suppose to discuse there pay rates on the job... hmmm, so how in the HELL would these student assistants find out without going the official routes AND why would they care! Well I later found out that they didn't know and didn't care by talking to each one individually. My co-workers and I were told that all student assistants are hired in at minimum wage and that there would be no exceptions regardless of our skill sets by the head director, Mike Russell. That next monday in a meeting with Mike Russell, he said and assured my co-workers and I that he was doing nothing to change the matter and that he cares less about our skill sets. Then right after that he said that in a re-evaluation process that we "may" have our pay raised due to our skill sets.... WTF! Well after getting air blown up my co-workers _sses and mine, we decided to go seek a higher power.
Well that Friday it all happened I went alone to see Human Resources and Payroll here on campus to explain what's happening. I was told to put my situation in writing and send the appeal to the head of Human Resources. You can see what I wrote first hand if you like by clicking here. Well after doing that over the weekend and sending it to the head on Monday I went back to talk and she told me to go talk to my head director. That's when the meeting happened and the bs was blown in the room. So deciding to see a higher power we thought we'd go to my head directors main boss on campus, but we'd like to have facts that something isn't right! I knew from the start that Vedat had all this done only because of his personnal vendetta against me for some d_mn reason and my co-workers just got pulled along for the ride. Well that Monday after the meeting the Mike Russell, we all fully decided to go against what was happening.
Andrea was off work after noon, but Adam and I came back after an hour lunch break (he usually has class till 3pm but skipped that day). Adam and I went to find out a few pay rates of the other student employees due to undisclosed sources telling us what they were making. By another undisclosed source we found some very interesting facts out. The first one is that all of Vedat's SA's were HIRED in higher than minimum wage... secondly one of his SA's was hired only 4 months ago on October 25, 2001 and was hired making more than my current SA's (he started at $6.50/hr). The catch on that is that there's suppose to be one Supervising SA (which I am for my 2 SA's) in that group and that guy hired at that much ISN'T that Supervising SA and the Supervising SA isn't making as much as he is, sounds like BS to you?!
Well after finding out some pay rates ahead of time Adam and I decided to officially request the open records of the PAR's (Personnal Action Request, the hiring contract) of these SA's. This made the Head Director, Mike Russell, VERY VERY mad cause the payroll was froze due to our request... hmm what's that tell ya! Well after that small victory on Monday we find out that the positions of the three of us were moved. Adam and I were moved directly under Vedat's command... hmm... and Andrea was moved under the command of Tim Hines (great guy, glad she didn't get pushed with us, mainly cause Adam and I requested the records). Now, Vedat is director for 2 sets of SA's, one for technical campus use (what I did when I was there at first) and one set for lab usage. Ofcourse I knew I wasn't going to be a technical SA again and I was right, he threw Adam and I in a lab and only gives Adam, a commuter student, 4 1/2 hours to work on Monday, from 7pm to 11:30pm, while I have no current work schedule for the lab.
will finish up soon have to go to class
ok screw class, I'm to pissed... here's a quick summary:
1 - Hired on Jan 2002 at $7.50/hr with 2 SA's hired at $6/hr
2 - Month later but pushed down to $5.15/hr due to "fairness to all SA's"
3 - Found out my old boss that hates me got this done.
4 - Got smoked blown up are _sses, that it's happening no matter what.
5 - Requested open reports of pay rates of ALL SA's in ITS.
6 - Got moved under the boss that hates me, and I'm out of work, but not yet fired.
That's all... what'd you think about this whole thing. If anyone know of a state lawyer who'd like to take a case for us students for free I'd appreciate it!
