Current Gen Cards Useless?

I forgot what thread it was, but I'm bringing the topic up again for discussion. There is a very small amount of good games out this generation which challenge these cards. The arguements before are, there is Prey and UT2007. Prey is scheduled, without a fixed date, for June and UT2007 for Winter. By that time, new gen cards will be released or close enough to it. I feel like my 7800 has gone to waste. I spent almost 400 beans and I played 2 or 3 next gen games, 1 out of which might have actually been worth playin with the 7800 (FEAR). But, it wasn't worth 400 bucks.

This sucks.

Play more than 1 type of game and youll realize that there are a lot more games worth playin. AoE 3, EQ 2, most sim games. I believe Quake 4 would stress your 7800GT if you turn up the settings.

I guess you can argue you it either way... You aren't satisfied because there aren't a bunch of games like FEAR that will make your 7800 series card cry, or you could just be happy that your card plays most games available at close to the highest settings.

I agree... The "can't miss" games on the PC are very few and very far in between.

The one that I'm really looking forward to right now is SiN Episodes.

Well, I bought my 7800GT, played FEAR, Quake 4, and COD2. One day while playing age of mythology, I realized how dumb of an investment it had been, then I tasked out and put it on the FS/FT forums. I am back to running a much cheaper 6800GT with an aftermarker cooler, and it is all good :)

guys you cant forget Need For Speed Most Wanted.
That game is fast paced and really requires some muscle in your videocard.
I cant even play the game 1600x1200 everything up with my X1800XL and the rig i have in my sig. And NFS MW is an AWSOME game! extremely addicting!

The last good NFS was PU. No doubt, no discussion. :)

I cannot stand the computer cheating, lack of good damage modeling, or the lack of just about everything that makes a car sim fun.

This describes every NFS that has been made since then.

To each their own. That the PC lacks a driving sim right now is pretty sad, I think.

Arcade based driving games are only fun for so long, IMHO. I tired of the newest ones after just a couple missions. Paired with the dumb vehicle choices for the games, they are worthless to me and hardly worth shelling out $300+ for so you can turn the graphics up.

I guess it depends on which monitor you have, what resolution you play at, and how much eye candy you like to have. A 7800GT will struggle at quite a few games at 1600x1200 with 4AA/16AF, let alone at higher resolutions. An X1900XT struggles in some games at high res so a 7800GT would get slaughtered.

I played it with an X800GTO with everything turned up and I played it just fine.

Richard Burns Rally is a driving Sim. It even models suspension physics of each wheel seperately.

It's hard, but fun. Unfortunately I can't figure out the hack to get widescreen resolutions to work.

I actually own Colin Mcrae Rally 2005 and it is also tough and in depth. Rally's really aren't my style though and it doesn't like my joystick and is VERY hard... I just wish for another game like Porsche Unleashed, I guess....

Gamespot on NFS:MW

"The races are solid but not spectacular. The artificial intelligence doesn't really help things along, because most of the game is rubber-banded like crazy. We actually set our controller down for 20 seconds--then picked it back up and caught our opponents on the final lap. And though the AI will occasionally crash and come to a complete halt, it'll catch up very, very quickly. Later on in the game, you get a voicemail message informing you that things are going to get tougher. At this point, the computer drivers magically start taking every single shortcut, and the rubber banding only seems to work against you. As a result, catching up after a mistake is much tougher. If this difficulty had gradually sloped up, it wouldn't be a big deal. But flipping the switch from "drive like crap" to "drive like a genius" is really annoying." <--RETARDED.

just wait til the year that every sequel comes out LOL

the year 2004 i think was the best no? far cry, doom 3, half life 2, ut2004 oh my

IMO 7800 isnt really "current gen" neither will 7900...

however the X1900XTX will be able to strut its stuff nicely when next gen games come out, you should really loook to some sort of roadmap developers are giving you with respecft to games before buying cards for a next gen game that doesnt exist.. as we can see mid~late 2006 will bring some killer games, then u can judge it up

I play at 1280x960 with my x1900xtx (monitor limitation), and I dont feel like the card is too fast. When you crank up all the details in games like Lost Coast, FarCry, FEAR, and COD2 you can tell that the card is putting its power to use.

I play it with a X800XL and can barely do 1024 x 768 with everything smoothly. I tried 1280 x 1024 (This is with 4x FSAA on and AF, you cant play a racing car game without FSAA, it just dont look as good, especially the NFS series, too jaggy, but with it, wow) and it ran like crap on my system, Athlon 64, 3200+ w/ 1 GB Memory and the X800XL. You sure you had everything, as in FSAA as well up?

Edit: Imo PU was one of the worst NFS, and I absolutly LOVE MW. Its pure adreanline kicking fun. I started playing it on my Xbox but got the PC version thinking how much better it would look and boy does it, but it does not run smooth at all, in fact so unsmooth that I have yet to hardly even play it on the PC. One of the reasons I am considering a video card upgrade, but I cant afford a X1800XT or better and looking at games with FSAA and AF on thats what it would take to be a upgrade from my current card. But its still fun on the Xbox and a blast to play on the 360 when my friend brings his over :p

Also this may be a processor thing, if its running super smooth for you on your GTO maybe you got alot better processor, if so that may be the culprit.

Just realize that good graphics aren't everything. Yeah, Prey and UT2007 are possibly the only good looking future games. However Bioshock, Precursors, Oblivion, and Warren Spector's new game will probably be awesome.

It was played on my old 3800+ Newcastle, and the X800GTO was unlocked to 16 pipes and overclocked :D

I game with my 7800GT at 530/1351 and COD2 just brutalizes it at highest settings. Have to tone it down a notch to keep 40-60fps.

I like it so much, I'm getting a second.

Does anyone know which API the U2K7 engine will utilize?
OpenGl, DX9 or DX10
