Curling - that ridiculous Olympic "sport"

Kev

Lifer
Have any of you seen this waste of an Olympic Event?

If you don't know what it is, it's basically shuffleboard on ice. I can't believe they made a sport out of this.

Can't wait till the 2006 Olympics when we see championship snowball fighting. I hope the USA wins the gold in that.

So it's not a sport because it's more focused on skill than on brute strength? Or is it that you just live in a place (in the US, I assume) where curling isn't a popular sport, so therefore you think it's a waste of an Olympic Event? I think you should grow up.

I thought curling was dumb until I tried playing it. It is a fun game to play and takes a great deal of skill.

Nah, I'm looking forward to the keg tossing competition in 2006

I'm an American and I find the sport fascinating. I have been watching it on CNBC and MSNBC and the finess and ability it takes to make some of those shots is amazing. Just because these people don't go 90 mph or fly through the air doesn't mean they are not athletes. Show these athletes the respect they deserve because I am sure that everyone here that is calling Curling silly doesn't have the ability that these people do. I bet the only thing you do that can be construed as athletic is maybe the keyboard punch, the PCI card shuffle, or maybe the one eyed wonder monitor salute!

Well, the US just won the gold, silver, and bronze in the snowboarding half-pipe competition. I wonder if other countries roll their eyes at snowboarding.

You're right.

I think I'm gonna go brush up on my snowman-building "skill" now. Maybe they'll make that an olympic sport too, and this athletic "skill" can be judged by 5 arbitrary, inconsistent judges.

Would you consider playing video games to be a sport because they rely on skill? I wouldn't.

<< On PMSNBC, the US just took the gold in the 100m Trapped Drunken Eskimo Shooting competition! Yes! >>

LOL. It was a miracle that they beat the heavily favored Iceland Eskimo Shooting contest.

Reminds me of a Homer Simpson line: "Hehe, Lisa. Vampires are make-believe, just like elves, gremlins, and eskimos."

X951 - Curling isn't a game where judges decide the winner. It is points based on how many stones are closest to the center. Trust me, it takes quite a bit of skill to make those shots. The first time I tried to slide down the ice with the rock in my hand, I fell on my ass.

<< it seems retarded, but I think it's actually really hard

in fact, most anything that takes place on ice is hard
>>

yeah, seriously. I have a new respect for the sport. I fell on my ass (and my head) a LOT when I tried playing up in Canada.
It's a LOOOOT harder than it looks.

I know. I was referring to the bad judging in the ice skating that I heard about.

If you live in the Philly area, there is a free curling tutorial being given this Saturday. I'll post details if anyone's interested.

I used to live in the Detroit area. I'd watch curling on CBC all the time! I think it's pretty sweet and x0940349 (whatever the hell that name is) just had his cheerios pissed in this morning. 😉

Although it's not particularly exciting at least it's better than bowling.

I'm sorry but if I spend 10 years perfecting my ability to throw the same ball down the same isle year after year at the exact same setup of pins you can bet your ass I'll get them all down each time. Bowling: The retard's sport. Sure it's fun when you're half drunk for sh*ts and giggles I guess ...

Yep, if X951 thinks its ridiculous everyone else should and it shouldn't be an Olympic event.

If you don't like it, don't watch it, but don't knock what other people work towards, especially Olympic athletes. Curling is definitely a sport and deserves to be in the Olympics.
