I wonder how high a frequency Intel could actually reach, if that was all they tried for, without any considerations for actual performance. If they just made a single core single threaded processor designed solely to reach the highest possible frequency. Could they hit 10GHz on air ?

I'm somewhat curious. What is the fastest processor these days in terms of GHz? Both by Intel and AMD?

I'm just out of the loop and curious. Just stock speeds, no overclocking.

If you lead me to water, I can read up more on the chip.

And for kicks, what would the fastest memory be for each offering, Intel and AMD respectively?

Since no-one else seemed to give you the answer, the fastest current AMD processor reaches 3.4GHz and is the Phenom II X4 965. (I don't believe they have a faster dual core, but I may be wrong as I haven't kept up on their newest models.)

If it's single-threaded performance you're looking for, you could certainly do worse than AMD Phenom II X2 555BE overclocked to 3.8-4.0Ghz for $90.

he said not overclocking.

And i dont think he's looking at budget.

Or he's very lost in how cpu's work.

Memory is independant of CPU.
Memory vendors have there own speeds, and DDR3, 2133mhz i think is the fastest u can get stock right now.

Intel has had 10ghz ALUs working in the lab, (and this was years ago) I would imagine they are well beyond that point now.
