Curious about waking up shivering violently

Hey,

I had the weirdest thing happen to me last night. I was curious if anyone else has had this happen or know any significance.

I normally sleep in just shorts with sheets. I'm always the person who's too warm while everyone else is complaining it's too cold. I may wear shorts outside when there's snow forecasted. I purposely own few long sleeve shirts due to the fact I bake to death in them.

I woke up in the middle of the night, and i felt like i was freezing to death. I was shivering so violently that my arms and legs are still sore. I had to put a shirt, a sweatshirt, and socks, and sweatpants, and an actual winter hat. I had a hotpack between my feet, and stacked on 3 more blankets.I could simply not feel warm, and shivered violently for another hour. We took my temperature and it was about 2 and a half degrees (f) below normal. About an hour later i started to feel warmer, and my temperature rose back up to where it would normally be. This morning I feel fine, but I've never felt so cold in my life.

I was just curious if there's any significance, my girlfriend said it was almost like I had hypothermia or something, but I was just sleeping in my bed, inside.

When was the last time you'd eaten? Perhaps your energy stores were just really, really low.

Probably around 5pm. I went to be a bit before midnight and it was around 2am when i woke up. The funny thing is that even in my dream I felt very cold. My girlfriend thought my shivering was faked because it was so violent, then she realized that I actually felt that cold and helped me layer on clothing.

Yeah that happens to me when I have not eaten enough, particularly if I have worked out hard that day. I have been better with my eating, so it has been happening less frequently, but sometimes I forget to eat and then this happens; it really sucks as it ruins your whole night of sleep.

Anyway, all I can recommend is to eat a little more or at least a little bit later.

Sounds symptomatic of a fever, but I'm not sure why it would appear so suddenly and then disappear by the morning.

Did you drink (alcohol) a lot or eat anything unusual or do anything excessive or out of the norm before this happened? You said this never happened to you before? Are you significantly overweight? What was the ambient room temperature and what sort of coverings did you have on?

If this is not the first time, you should see your primary care physician. If you notice unusual/drastic changes in your energy levels from time I strongly recommend you go see a doctor for some bloodwork. While what you experienced may be some unusual unremarkable occurance, if that temperature was correct, it may be of noticeable concern. Hypothyroidism and diabetic disorders are common conditions that show those types of symptoms. It's nothing to get too alarmed about but it would be prudent to see your primary care physician, especially if you show more symptoms.

You probably just needed some food. It happens to me from time to time, no biggie just find the nearest food and chow down. For instance on my last drive to chicago, I ate at about 6, when getting into town at noon I had those chills and shivers hit me big time. Drove straight up to Subway and demolished a footlong, problem solved!

You sound exactly like me in terms of always being warm. I can go outside in the snow barefoot with shorts and no shirt on without feeling cold for an extended period of time. I don’t make a habit of it though. I wouldn’t say I ever feel uncomfortably warm but my skin temperature is always super warm when compared to others. I used to wake up shivering and feeling like I was freezing to death all of the time about 10 - 15 years ago. It would never happen when I slept in or woke up in the middle of the night though. It would only happen when I woke up early for school from an alarm clock. I was a really deep sleeper and I would usually have to set several alarm clocks to wake me up. So this would happen to me 5 days a week for about 4 years minus holidays and summer vacation. I’d always have to shower at night as opposed to in the morning because even hot showers made me colder. I saw doctors about it but none of them came up with a diagnosis or solution. So I just adjusted my lifestyle so that I always wake up naturally and it’s rarely happened since.
