******** UPDATE *************
Solved by using Dual Monitor Tools to create a hotkey to toggle locking the mouse cursor to the current screen
*****************************

I have been using an AV receiver connected to my GPU via HDMI to display 1080p60fps video, and to output 5.1 audio of all kinds (uncompressed, DTS-HDMA, 24-192, etc) through my surround sound setup.
It has been glorious, but the move to displayport-required content (high resolution, high refresh rate, freesync/g-sync) seems to cause me an unanticipated annoyance.

In Windows, it seems I cannot use HDMI for audio unless it is connected to an active display. It is my understanding that this is due to HDMI's inability to send an audio signal without also sending a video signal.
So, in order to get the most out of my equipment (listed below), I have to extend my desktop to a display that I may not necessarily want to have active.

There are several scenarios where I would prefer having only a single monitor on, and in those cases I have to extend my desktop to a monitor/input that isn't being used (phantom monitor syndrome).
The problem with the phantom monitor is that the mouse cursor frequently gets lost on the phantom screen. This is very annoying.

Is there any way around this? Is there a program/setting that can block the cursor from moving to the phantom screen? Could there be?

Anyone else use an HDMI surround sound system with a DP monitor? What do you do?

MY EQUIPMENT:
- PC: 2700k, GTX 670, 16GB RAM, Windows 10
- Monitors: 1080p60Hz ASUS, 1080p144Hz Nixeus
- AVR: Onkyo NR-515 (analog inputs are stereo-only)

*Sidenote:
I ran some heaven benchmarks to test the performance impact of running the phantom monitor, and it is not noticeable on my system (the average of 3 tests for each configuration differ by a half of a percent), but I imagine it maybe could have a small impact (a % or 2) for CPU-bound systems. idk

Yep, I have the same problem. I set the 2nd display to the lowest resolution and use dual monitor tools to keep the mouse on the first.

Their site seems to be down but you should be able to get it from somewhere like techspot.

Maybe mirror monitor mode then just physically turn the second monitor off?

Too bad they don't sell 2-inch monitors. :)

Praise Deders, I'm Cured! These forums have never let me down.

It took me less than a minute to download and install Dual Monitor Tools (MajorGeeks), and set Alt+Win+D as a hotkey to toggle locking the mouse cursor to the current screen.
I will also eventually try lowering screen resolution on the phantom monitor, and testing performance again, just for fun.

On mirroring the monitors:
Duplicating screens would be a problem with monitors/inputs that are not both capable of the same res and refresh.
