hey all, i bought the gateway 6400 server a while back, and was getting random freezes, so i installed speedfan to check the temperatures of my cpu. boy was i surprised when it reported 76 degrees celcius! i didn't think that this could be accurate since it's been running unchanged for months now. i went ahead and installed motherboard monitor to see what it reported. to my surprise, it reported the same temperature as speedfan did.

after this, i shut down the computer til i would have some time to look at it. when i got home from work, i went and applied some arctic aluminua. booted up the system, and the temps were still reported in the 70 degree range. rebooted, and went into the bios setup. checked in there, and it's reporting 50 degrees. this eased my mind some, since now i know it's just being reported incorrectly.

i was just wondering if anybody else has experienced similar problems to this, and if they found a solution or not.

Not trying to be a smarta$$ but I think you need some air. 😉 Right now I think you can't be sure what your accurate temps are and if you are having problems then you can assume the worse. If you keep running it at high temps then it won't be long for this world. Vent the case better, get a better HSF or both.

i've actually checked, and there actually is decent flow through the case. there's currently 2 120 mm delta's on the case. one intake which blows over the hard drive cage, and out outgoing.

the actual temperature, if u read through the entire post (i know it's kinda long 😛) is actually about 50 degrees, just somehow it's being reported incorrectly when i'm in the OS as 70+ degrees.

Actually you said that two different programs reported the temps in the 70'sC but the BIOS reported it as 50C. That is what I am referring to. You might doubt the software readings but your instability(random freeze-ups) is testifying to it's accuracy. Or at least it could be. Blowing air on the HDD's is nice but it's the CPU that is the most frequent cause of instability when hot. Two fans probably aren't doing the job. You could try a simple test; just take the side panel off and direct a small fan towards the MB/CPU area. Let it run for a while and see if it still freezes up. If it does then you will have eliminated (most likely) heat as the cause and can move on. If it stops the problem then you will know how to fix it. Don't believe the BIOS temps as "gospel". They can missreport also, depending on how they are calibrated and where the sensor is located. MBM is usually pretty accurate though.

Also, between myself, family and friends there are 10 of these GW 6400s. EVERY SINGLE ONE does the exact same temp error.
In bios there are reasonable numbers (35-50 C)
In several different temp progs from within w2k, temp is outrageous (73.5 C)

Well, don't forget to "worry" that you need to bring those temps down a bit. I think I'd tend to believe the software at this point. Of course you could always get something like a "Digital Doc" or any other third party temp probe w/digital readout and confirm once and for all, who is right. Dell is another vendor that seems to understate (nice choice of words, huh?) the need for ventilation. You're lucky if you get one fan on those. 🙂

I've got Digital Doc 5's in my three 6400s. The temps are consistantly less than 94 F. In general these cases have great cooling. A 120 intake (front) and a 120 exhaust (back).

BEWARE: you CANNOT directly measure the cpu temp with the Digital Doc sensors. You heatsink would not fit correctly.
