Cumine 550E vs. Duron 600

I wanted to buy Duron actually, but I'm not so sure now. I have Abit BH6 mobo (133MHz bus, 2/3 AGP divider), DIMM 128Mb Fujitsu 10ns and Viper 770 TNT2. Looks like Cumine will overclock to 124x5.5=682 maximum (Viper wont work @ 133 probably), but I fear my memory wont handle it.

The price will be almost the same (if I'll sell my old stuff). So what should I buy?

Thanx in advance!

well there is no need for you to buy a new motherboard if you get 550E

but you need to get new mobo for the D600

if i were you, i will get the intel chip taht goes into your current mobo
then wait for AMD DDR chipset to come out and get mature and stable

You may also encounter PCI/RAM problems at 124, depends on your stuff. I'm in a similar position, have decided to go a a CuMine upgrade while waiting for the 760 chipset from AMD. The CuMine 633's appear promising, lots of reports of hitting 950 Mhz with stock HS/Fan. I am a little suspicious of success rate, but we'll see. They should cost around $90 or so, less if you work some kind of coupon deal. Will also need a MSI Master or something comparable.

Admittedly a Duron is cheaper and has about the same overclocking potential, I just decided to pass on the current AMD motherboards and go for a 760/DDR setup.

i actually went through this before

my older specs
Celeron 366 at 567/103 at 2.00v stable
256MB PC100 (2x 128MB)
Abit BX6/2
Creative TNT2ultra

it is actually performing rather alright
but i wanted something faster and i couldnt wait for anything so i got these
Intel P3/700E (868/124 now - my PC100 just cant do it)
Asus V7700 GTS Pure

now this is like a new system ;D

If you sell the old stuff, go with the duron. I upgraded to a 550e as well, but the mobo i had died, so I then upgraded to a duron system and I'm now at 1000. Pretty good for a 70 dollar chip i think.

<< why not pay more for Cumine 600or650e >>

Not reason not to, really just a question of how well the CPU you get will overclock. Assuming two things, you don't want to buy a new MB and you don't have a 1/4 PCI divider (BH6 Rev 1), then a Coppermine is in all likelihood limited to a 112 or 124 (maybe) FSB (124 puts your PCI at 41.3 Mhz, danger zone for my HD and NIC's).

Realistically, a 700e will get me 784 Mhz at the 112 FSB and will go for $200. The CuMine 633 will cost half that and may get me 950 Mhz with AGP/PCI in spec.

I realize a PIII at 784 may do somethings about as well as a CuMine at 950, but it won't do RC5 as well. I'm really only "renting" this option for 3-6 months until the 760/DDR stuff is available, stable and affordable, so why invest in a PIII?

I've got 2 machines to upgrade, 300/450 and a 366/550, so for $200 I can get a couple of CuMine 633's and perhaps get lucky. Going Duron means almost $300 in MB's. Worse case scenario is I get stuck using 75 Mhz FSB for 712 Mhz, close to what I will get out of a PIII. If one of the do will dance at 950 Mhz, I prolly won't even bother upgrading that one to a 760 sys.

I had some part here from previous upgrades. I bought a new moterboard, duron 600, ram and power supply. I then sold the old stuff as a complete system after I bought a case for $20 and a 50x cdrom. I broke even and now I have 850mhz which my v5 likes.
