CUBX and strange fan header behavior...

The CUBX is a fairly spiffy BX board but there is one thing it does that is bugging me. Whenever there is any load on the CPU, the CPU fan header (and maybe the others too? I'm not sure) get a little extra burst of voltage and the fan on my golden orb spins about 150 RPM faster. Now maybe this is a built in "feature" to help cool the CPU under load, but any time the CPU does anything more strenuous than place characters on the screen from the keyboard, or push the mouse cursor around, the fan on my gorb speeds up. This wouldn't bug me so much, but the fan on the gorb isn't too quiet to begin with... every time I do something even as innocuous as flicking my mouse's scroll wheel to navigate down a web page (which I do a heck of a lot), the fan speeds up and it sounds a little bit like an engine being revved. It's kind of annoying. I'm wondering if anyone else's CUBX or other ASUS board does this, or just mine.

Thanx...

I've made the same observation with my CUBX/Celeron 566/Golden Orb combo. For me it sounded like all the fans start spinning faster. I now use the change in sound level to gauge if the CPU is working harder. In my search to solve this riddle, I came across something in the BIOS under Power Management (I think) that has settings for percentage CPU usage at idle. Its set at 75% (or so) by default but can't go higher. I didn't have time to experiment with this so I don't know if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Cheers,

if you have the asus hardware monitoring installed, there is an option for "smart fan control" or something that extent.

if it is checked, then when the board senses and extra drain, it'll pump up the fan speeds to compensate (keep the chip cooler). i found this to the source of some voltage errors that kept popping up.

good luck,

dirty

Thanks for the replies. I'm using MBM rather than the ASUS monitoring software. Sounds like it may just be something that the monitoring chip likes to do by default, I guess I'll have to live with it for now.

I`m glad to see that I`m not the only one with this. I thought I was crazy. But everytime I scroll the mouse wheel, the fan speeds up. I tried the smart fan feature, but when I did the voltage measurements went crazy. The 12 went to 8.5 and 5 went to 3.2 etc. Got all kinds of alarms from that. Changed back to the regular fan settings and voltage readings are fine. Go figure.

Edit> Does anyone else have a LONG pause at the Starting Win 98 message on boot up? I have a network card in, but it is assigned an ip address. I`m talking 30-40 seconds of nothing before it will finish starting up.

I have an abit bx6-rev2, and i have the exact same fan problem. After using some monitoring software, I found out that whenever there is some load on my cpu, all my voltages jump up about 1 volt, which, i believe, leads to the fan problem. Does any other bx6-rev2 owners have the same problem, or do i just have a defective mobo?
