Cubs threaten to leave Wrigley

I really, really wish people would quit giving into these multi-millionaire owners (billionaire?) So many of the teams are incredibly profitable, but instead of investing the profits, the owners say "make the tax payers pay for improvements to our company."

How do you think they get to keep all their money?

They can't go giving it away if they can get something for free and profit from it.

On a side note I wonder how much fun playing video games / watching porn on such a big screen would be.

I can't really set the Cubs moving out of Wrigley since I'm sure this is just a threat. I'd liked to see what claim those people outside the ballpark have to an unobstructed view. I'm sure they'll eventually get paid off to some extent though.

Let them move, they haven't won the World Series since 1908.
Hopefully none of the taxpayers will be shouldering the $500m renovation.

Who the hell cares if the roof top bleachers go out of business. Wrigley is one of the last few old ballparks. Treat sports like BUSINESS.

Don't give them money for ballparks that they can afford themselves, and don't tell them what to do in their own stadium, aside from health and safety regulations.

That ESPN article really doesn't say a whole lot. They make it sound like they are spending tons of money for Wrigley, but really do not give us any idea of what the average costs of other MLB teams in stadiums. Seems like they are whining over nothing, typical sports owner.

The Cubs losing are a bigger draw than the Rays are when they are winning. Without Wrigley, the Cubs would be in the same situation as the Marlins. Another terrible team with an amazing stadium and a whole lotta empty seats. They should embrace the fact that they are a shitty team, that they've been a shitty team for a lifetime and they STILL manage to put butts in seats. STFU, trim the ivy and deal with the fact that you bought a tradition, not a baseball team.

If you wanted a winner you should have been in the hunt for the Dodgers.

The article I read wasn't about spending money at all. It was about opportunity cost. Wrigley and the Cubs are heavily regulated by the city as a landmark while in reality they are a business. The owner is losing millions in potential ad revenue and ticket sales.. scammed in every direction by the city and the rooftop owners.

1) No taxpayer money is involved

2) Fuck the rooftop owners

3) Put a team worth a shit on the field

At least we have the Blackhawks.

The reality is Wrigley is one the worst stadiums in all pro sports and is far and a way the worst in the MLB. It needs to be imploded and rebuilt not merely renovated.

The problem is they have a contract it says where they share 17% of their revenue for these views and it sounds like it's good for another 10-11 years.

A quick google showed they got sued because they were making money from these seats so now they are probably going to do the same back to keep them around.

He can just build the display and pay for whatever penalty breaking the contract(s) with the rooftop business owners would incu.

Fuck the owners. Go ahead and move the team you greedy cock sucker...

Read the article, the owner want's to modernize the stadium at HIS expense but the city won't let him generate ad revenue all the other teams benefit from because billboards or a modern big screen replay TV (like every other team has) would block the rooftop seats view from across the street. As long as the city dictates how he operates HIS business the Cubs will never be able to attract/afford the kind of talent to win a WS..

Those saying fuck the rooftop owners (i fully agree. why should they make profit off the cubs?) also need to know there are contracts in place to protect them. he can't just go and ignore them.

Wrigley field is a historical landmark. there is only so much he can do. The idea of moving is a great for him. The issue i have is would people come to see a shitty team play at a new stadium?

Yeah rooftop owners this sucks for you. I think Wrigley is an amazing ball field. Baseball has very little magic left in it and the old style stadiums are awesome. I live in South Florida and have been to the new stadium. It is VERY nice on the inside. However given a choice I would go to Wrigley everytime. Also Miami made a huge mistake in putting the stadium in horrible part of town. For those that don't know anything about Miami. Think of Harlem and then go to the worst streets of Harlem and plant a mega stadium there and wonder why the general public does not want to go to night games. They don't even have enough parking for the people so you have to pay random lots or homes to park then walk to the stadium. Not a big deal in a decent neighborhood but...

It replaced the orange bowl and even when huge college game would be played there ie Miami FSU Miami-UF you couldn't give away your tickets because the area/experience was so crappy.

Wish they would have put the stadium in Palm Beach County. Our baseball games are very busy. They are even putting another stadium in for the Houston Astros around 10 miles away from the St Louis Cardinals stadium.
