cubicle monitoring.

here is what I am thinking.

having a piece of software accessible via the web to check who is actually in their cubicles or office.

any ideas?

how about an ethernet cam, then you can just look and see who is in their cube/what they are doing

I'll trade you my cubemate for my own cube. He's very good at watching people and telling them what to do, since he's such a knowitall

You gotta deploy a Big Brother Device I see?

i was thinking more of something that monitors mouse movement.

No one at your company writes on paper, or types on the keyboard? Are you going to get pissed at people for being out of their cube because they've been typing constantly or the last 20 minutes and haven't touched the mouse?

i am a manager. the reason this came to my head was becuse at MIT they have a bathroom occupancy website so why not a cubicle one too.

Geez, some corporations dislike personal communication? I get out of my office every chance I get. Screw talking on the phone when I can walk 100 yards and talk to the person face to face.

So you don'l walk to the pisser and find it occupied.

Bloomberg has it tied into the building access system so that you can use your Bloomberg terminal to look up someone's profile. If they are in the office, it will say which office the are in and when they entered. If they are out, it will show which office they last left and when.

It's kinda handy when someone sends a support request and they don't answer their phone. If you see that they left the Tokyo office 4 hours ago, you know not to hold your breath for them. 🙂

What are you going to do if you find out someone was out of his cubicle for 12 minutes?

If people really hate the cubicle monitoring, they'll open notepad and set something heavy on the keybard whenever they leave.

Get badges with RFID tracking system. I know for a fact that there are companies out there that can track employee movements on an overhead map based on the location of their badge within the building. I'm sure the system is pricey, but if you're gonna do it, might as well go all out. I can be their time card, door access, etc. card too.

I really dont care whether or not they are in their cubicle. However, i hate talking to people on the phone when I am in an office as small as i am. I am a huge advocate of personal communication. I thought it would be a fun side project thats all.

what is the character limit for notepad? i know you can set the repeat rate to something low, but i wonder how much time that will give you

Easiest way would be to set all the computers to lock up with the Screen Saver after XX minutes. Then have a PC Anywhere type program on each one. You could take over the PC an dif the SS was on and the PC was locked, they are probably not at their desk, or if they are, they aren't doing much.

But when you connect up they can see you doing it so if you want to remain invisible, then I don't know that it'd work.

That bathroom system works on a series of electrical circuits. AFAIK, when the light switch is flicked on, it sends a signal to the server which then indicates "occupied." (Or it could be when the door is closed...I really don't remember.) They have a similar system running to their washing/drying machines too. Anyway, that approach won't work for a cubicle, because well...no one wants you to think the bathroom is empty when it isn't or vice versa. But it would seem as if people would want you to think they're in their cubicles when they really aren't.
