The dozen migrants, some sheltered in the truck cab or under a yellow tarp covering the bed, were noticed last week by a U.S. Customs aircraft south of Key West, Coast Guard Petty Officer Ryan Doss said.
Thats odd that someone would notice and report a pickup truck 40 miles out at sea.

You know....for a country that was founded on immigration we sure are bastards towards immigrants. The cool thing about the whole Cuban immigration issue is that the become citizens if they make it to shore under their own power. I watched a chase on the news that ended like that. Needless to say....I was elated by the fact that these people acheived their goal of freedom from an oppresive "communist government."

Although I'm an immigrant to this country myself, I must say that we shouldn't let everyone into the country. Look how overcrowded and sickening our cities are getting. I'm utterly disgusted by the way people treat our country. But I feel kind of torn on the issue; kind of sucks to be stuck over there but then again the whole world can't fit in America.

Cities aren't overcrowded by immigrants..They are overcrowded by people breeding like rabbits.

Actually in the US the birthrate is between fairly stable and slightly falling. Immigration is supposedly going to be a big part of the 130 odd million new people we get by the year 2050.

Awww, they scuttled the "boat." I agree that figuring out how to turn an old pickup truck into a boat should be worth more than a free ride back to Havana.

I'm usually all for slowing down the flood of illegal immigrations, but in this case I agree.

Yup, they should have let them stay. cuba is what about 120 miles off Florida's coast, so they made it over 80 miles of ocean in a 51 Ford pickup truck. Dayum, Coast Guard cut them some slack.

There has to be a cut off point. Just like the drinking age is 21, there has to be a definite line.

The line is feet dry, if they don't make it they go back.

Just the way it is.

Cuban Rice! :D

I think the "make it to shore" law stinks. If they just make it to US waters on their own, should be good enough. But our coast guard grabbed them in international waters? BS if you ask me.

The closest thing to pure american is the american indian. Everybody else here is an immigrant. We should be more lax on our immigration laws, but we should also heavily punish/eject anybody who violates those laws. Illegal immigration is killing us a little bit at a time. But controlled immigration needs to be more flexible.

DId that make any sense? lol

Anyway, we need a Dale Brown-style Superfortress to go get those guys back. :D

i love how you cheapen the lives of those "idiots" from across the border. the majority of those deaths are usually women and children. quite of few of those "idiots" worked hard and are living honest lives. living the american dream, many are currently serving in the military and dying for your ass.

grow up

The only way that they were going to be allowed to stay in the US is if they had a 95 mph fastball.

I heard that the Coast Guard had to use "excessive amounts" of ammo to sink it. So it was definitely well built. (And it didn't hurt that it was a Chevy.)

A propeller attached to the drive shaft of the green vintage pickup was pushing it along at about 8 mph, Doss said. The truck-raft was kept afloat by empty 55-gallon drums attached to the bottom as pontoons.

8mph! :D That is cool. But I agree, it would take some balls to try and drive that thing through the ocean. :Q Good thing they didn't run into any rough seas. They must have had plenty of gas, too. I don't think those old Chevy engines get very good gas milage, especially chugging along at 8MPH.

Maybe that wasn't max speed, and they were getting the most out of their fuel, though. They're obviously not too stupid.. besides the driving a modified truck in the ocean part. :p

They might've made better time if they'd bothered to take the plow off the front of it.

I'm probably nitpicking here, but I think the actual law states that if they can stand on any ground they would be allowed to stay. That would include being able to stand in the sand in shallow water, not just dry sand. That is at least what I heard on the radio this morning.

Ten bucks says they did get the idea from Junk Yard Wars.... The final event of last year's season was a triathalon, and their vehicles had to race in the water.... The American and British teams' vehicles looked very similar to that!
