CTX monitors, anyone? And LCDs in general.

I asked this in the Video forum, but didn't get a response. Does anyone have experience with this brand? What are your thoughts?

I'm considering two of their "rotating" (vertical view) monitors for a dual setup.

I'd also like some opinions on LCD monitors that are suitable for gaming. Suggestions?

I can't comment on CTX LCD's, but I have a CTX VL950 19" CRT running strong for almost 4 years now.
Anand had it as his pick for value/budget and gaming systems, but I had it before he recommended it :p
They are a very good "value" monitor maker, but they do have higher end stuff as well.
I'd buy another one if I came upon a good deal.

I've got a CTX 1997FS 19" monitor, got it as a budget 19" monitor for £150 to replace my aging 15". It's nice, being able to do 1280x1024 @ 75Hz is much better for my eyes than 1024x768 @ 60Hz!

Can't comment on any of their other monitors tho! :)

I've been using this model for 3 years. While it's not the best in the world, it has served me well. Within the past couple of weeks, I replaced it with a 21" Trinitron though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem with CTX is their customer support.
I've bought 2 19" crt monitors from them with no hassle, but apparently when ppl get a bad monitor (which happens more frequently than it should) they have a rough time resolving it.
If you buy from newegg you should be ok, but you take the risk of having to ship the monitor back if its defective.
As far as CTX LCD's are concerned I would avoid them, their defective pixel policy isn't publicly disclosed.
For more info on which LCD manufacturer EVERYONE should read this article from tomshardware

I had the worst RMA experience of my life with my CTX 17" PR711. When I recieved my monitor I had no idea I would have use of it for 5 months out of the next year. That's right, I had to return it 3 times and it took and average of 2+ months each time to get it back (They finally replaced it). Great monitor at a great price and I will never buy another CTX. Of course, YMMV.

I had a whole string of CTX monitors connected to the same source and they all had a different picture. The failure rate was unacceptable. CTX is a bargain basement, discount store type product. If you want first-class oats you have to pay top dollar; if you are willing to run them through the horse first they are lots cheaper.

hi

i do not have any CTX LCD experience, only an old 15" CRT, however

i have just yesterday purchased a brand new NEC Multisync LCD 2010, 21" LCD with 20.1" viewable area at the Pomona Computer show. Put me back about $800 but man it was so well worth it. So far this is the best monitor i have ever head and i had many.

if you are on a budget and are looking for an LCD, I very highly recommend the NEC. I saw the 19" go for $600, the 17" for about 400 and the 15" were rediculously cheap already at the same place.

When I looked at all the LCDs lined up next to each other, the NEC ones really stood up when runing applications, especially games and movies. They had far better look and feel then sony, mitsubishi, samsung and a whloe slew of other. KDS next to them is right down oooogly and barely works. I think I would have to go with SOny as a 2nd choice, while unfortunately CTX, KDS and few others were very dissapointing to me.

The price difference isnt that much really between them and IMHO well worth it. I also strongly suggest shopping at places like the computer shows, just find out where and when they are near your location as they will save you a LOT of money. For example, I saw the LCD for which I paid a little over $ 800, at Frys or Best Buy (forgot which) about 2 weeks ago on sale for $1499 !!!!!! Now tahts a difference and savings aint it ? It really does pay to shop around.

O one more thing, I dont know about other monitors but the new NEC LCD displays come with direct digital conenctions, so if you buy a ATI 9700 or so, you wont need to use that little adapter that attaches to the back of teh card, just plug it directly and set monitor for digital.

I have a CTX PR960F and I hate how it has to warm up for about 30 minutes in order to give me a sharp picture.

I recommend against CTX.

Well, thanks all. Looks like CTX is officially off the list, and a couple NEC 1760NX's will be there instead. Little more than I was hoping to spend, but it'll have to be.

Ditto :D, I bought my VL950 from sams club at least 3-4 years ago, it is still working well as my second system monitor. Only replaced it around six months ago with a 'very impressive' diamondtron monitor on my main rig.
CTX makes quality monitors.

I was intending to buy a ctx 960f, but then decided against it and have now placed the iiyama 454 on the list now.
