Because if someone made a fake logon screen app, and you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, you'd get the "windows security" box w/ the task manager and stuff.

It's a reverse psychology trick implemented by the NT team. In WindowsNEANDERTHAL...errr I mean Win9X, ctrl + alt + del was BAAAAAAAAAAAD and you didn't do it unless you absolutely had to. So, the genius minds in the NT development team decided to make this the necessary keystrokes needed to log onto the terminal. It was in hopes that the inept would avoid pushing it keeping them THAT much further from causing undue harm to precious workstations and servers.

Windows has built in handicapped software that takes care of it.

I always assumed it was remote security, so that if someone remotely connected to your machine, they wouldn't be able to send cltr-alt-delete to your machine (it would send it to their own machine instead). Of course, now every single remote connect utility has a "send cltr-alt-delete to host" function, so it is really moot. It could still be good protection against an application that looks like a logon, but said application would not be running first thing at bootup anyways (pre-logon).

Microsoft is racist: They don't want people with only 2 fingers to use Windows NT.

Many computers are always running, and people just log in when they need to use them.

okay the original Ctrl+Alt+Del was done so that if a trojan horse was there, it would be cleared out of memory (because it looks for that sequence to reboot) and it wont note down your password.

Since "Alt" and "Ctrl" are right next to each other, you can hit both keys with one finger.
