Ctrl+Alt+Del issue

I was on a friends computer tonight and I thought it was going kinda slow for a p4 so I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to see how many processes she had running. After I hit the keys, the box popped up for about a second and then dissapeared on its own. I ran Spybot and McAfee, both of which returned numerous spyware and viruses. I then defraged and tried Ctrl+Alt+Del again...Same result, popped up and then went away on its own after about a second. Any suggestions on what might cause this or how to fix?

The numerous viruses would be the cause. Check out this virus description, section 5, for some registry keys you could look at: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.elitper.a@mm.html Copy Regedt32.exe and rename the copy to Regedt32.com if you can't run it either (thanks SagaLore for making me think of this tip 🙂).

I would disable System Restore and drop into Safe Mode for another McAfee scan there. If you didn't try the Microsoft AntiSpyware beta yet, it's pretty good, try it here. Doesn't work in Safe Mode, but still sounds like it might be what she needs.
