Css fps

I'm only getting about 35 fps in most maps. I know my set up is no where near top of the line but was wondering if anyone has had success with messing with rates. I already know the cl_cmdrate, cl_updaterate commands and have found the best combination for those two. Are there any other rate commands that I could mess with to improve performance?

simply upgrade your video card to a 6600 or better and you should be good to go.

I figured. Well with Dell and all its bs this comp isn't equipped with a pci-e x16 nor a LGA775 socket so new system is in the works. As for my current rates, I'll acquire them when I play later tonight.

You must have an AGP slot though? If you do, you still have upgrade options.

I have 3 pci slots and a socket 478 mobo... My main problem is my overall setup. But I thought I might have some luck playing with rates.

this.
Just build a new rig. If CSS, a fairly old game (and easy on requirements) is killin yo shiz, then real games won't even run.

No apology is necessary. It is straight up the truth.

rates...
cl_updaterate 25
cl_cmdrate 66
Resolution 1024x768
Mode, Texture, and Shadow detail are all high (tried low on all and no improvement haha)
Shader detail low.

Any other rate commands that I could mess with?

Note: the typical updaterate 101 settings give me massive choke, no loss though.

I used to play cs:s a lot. Although I had a really fast rig at the time so I didn't have to mess with my settings much besides initially setting my rates to 100 I read that cl_cmdrate should be set to the average fps you are getting. In your case then cl_cmdrate 66 is probably far too high. Try around 30 I am guessing. Also, although you say you can't tell any difference between settings for things like texture and shadows, those do make a difference it probably just depends on the exact map you are on so for a system as weak as yours it's not very smart to leave them on high. The only one I might leave on high is shadows because you can use those to spot people hiding.

PS Have you heard of Casey's config? It is a tweaked config file for people running low specd systems. It makes the game look like ass but it works wonders. There are also other configs not quite as hardcore as Casey's that still improve fps a lot without making it look like as bad.

yes but in cs:s matching your cmd rate to your average fps seems to help with the smoothness of play.

upgrading your CPU /mobo/memory would give you a massive increase ...source engine is very cpu bound...so i disagree with the other posters.

i have a laptop with a roughly equivalent gpu in it and a 1.6 core 2 duo and i get 50-90fps

this is true, messing with the cmdrate/update rate will not help fps; the source engine is processor dependent

Right, but it does help with your choke and your loss.
