A particularly good episode of CSI is being rerun tonight at 9:00 EST on CBS (is that enough three-letter abbreviations for ya?) ;)

This episode is a fictionalized account of a real case in which an airline passenger died after being subdued during an incident of "air rage".

If you're not familiar with CSI: it's a combination cop thriller and medical drama about a team of forensic investigators. Sort of like "ER Meets NYPD". This show is not quite as mindless as most entertainment, and it's peopled by good actors, notably the wonderful William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger.

Cool, how did you become 'Den Mother'

Long ago, for a few days, I was an 'Elite Member' (a status granted by the AnandTech Administrator.) Some of the "old guard" bitched and whined that I did not deserve this honour because I hadn't been here as long as some other members, and I was not perceived as a "tech". One disgruntled individual described me as "nothing but a chatroom kiddie."

So I resigned from the ranks of the Elite. Not really a big deal anyway, just a word under your name. A little over a year ago, I made a joke saying that I sometimes feel as if I am the Den Mother to a Cub Scout troop of 41,000 naughty boys. I guess the Administrator wanted to give me some sort of distinction, because the next morning I noticed that overnight I had become a Mother!

The bestowal of this title could also have had something to do with the fact that I am (by far) the oldest gal hereabouts.
So remember to watch yer #?%@! language, cubs, there's a granny on board. ;)

CSI is by far one of the best shows on TV now. I missed a lot of the episodes last spring because of my calc homework (it was due friday, and I'd always put it off until Thursday night). It's an excellent show.

Might not want to let wee little kids watch it, it tends to be gory sometimes.

Still, no show since "Buerk's Law" has had me guessing until the very end as to just who the killer is. I never miss CSI, and when I'm not home, TiVo always catches it for me :)

what the hell, I dped, edited my post, now the other post is gone! :p

Sorry, I was trying to be helpful by deleting one of your double posts, while at the same time you were deleting the content of the other!

Here's Siva's text that I zapped by mistake:

That thread brings back memories. I remember posting in GH and this annoying guy named Paulson would always bring up his 1ghz Athlon in every single post. I always wondered if he was most improved, how bad he had been before that.

Sorry, Siva. Nothing personal. If it were personal, I would have banned you and said something scathing in this spot. ;)

Does anyone else find it strange that the cops do practically nothing on that show?
The CSI people seem to do everything: interrogate suspects, run manhunts, etc.

The only thing the cops seem to do is arrest someone.

I enjoy watching CSI. I missed this episode, so have to check it out. Will Peterson is a great actor. Check out his work in Manhunter and To Live and Die in LA.

There's some interesting CSI episodes, and it is a little better than most of the drivel...... but.... am I the only one rooting for the 'bad guys' in that show because the 'good guys' are so arrogant?

True. Kind of like "Quincy", where the Medical Examiner solved the crimes, apprehended the perps (often tricking them into confessing,) and did about everything except personally pop 'em into the slammer.

LOL, I totally forgot about "Quincy."

That was very much one of my favorite shows.

A very apt comparison.

This is way off topic, but here goes...

DukeLeto, did you see the recent "Dune" miniseries on the SciFi Channel?

If so, what did you think?

Well, ok I'll try to keep it short:
(and I only watched it the first time -- my cable was out for the re-airing, lol)

On the one hand I usally always like to at least see what a director/writer, etc does with an author's vision.

On the other, it's a terribly hard task -- 2 entirely diferent mediums.
The only movie i ever saw that was 100% accurate was "Day of the Jackal" -- 3/1 hrs long and it was almost word for word from the book.

Overall, it was interesting.
They did do some strange things, like changing all the pronunciations, and the costumes were a little weird -- The Sardaukar looked like total dorks in those hats.

Some of the scenery was unimpressive. Some of the special effects were much better though.

Both Baron's were well cast, but some of the other characters were lacking.
I mean Jose Ferrer, Max Von Sydow, Sting, they were all great choices by Lynch.

And how could I forget Patrick Stewart -- "ATOMICS!" Maybe my favorite scene from that movie. I figure when I start going bald I'm going to copy that bald on top, long hair on the sides look he had.

I also felt that this version somewhat assumed the viewer knew a little bit too much.

In Lynch's version, there was a lot more of the narrator adding in the background stuff or a lot more of the character's thought process that added a bit more depth to the entire experience -- a little bit more true to the experience of reading the book.

I think it would be real interesting to see what Lynch could have done with 6 hours. If I remember right, he had to do a lot of cutting.

Overall, I like Lynch's version better.
But this wasn't a bad effort just could have been done a little better. Maybe in some ways they were trying to be so different than Lynch's version (pronunciations, costumes, etc) that it took a little bit away from the storytelling.
