The load must be REALLY bad on these servers then. Back when I had a useable video card 2 wks ago I had Steam and CS up and running fairly quickly.

Steam is indeed a P.O.S!

I installed it yesterday and all it odes is lag, stall and crash when I try to play TFC--EVERY TIME!!

Guys: .......... DO WE REALLY NEED TO INSTALL STEAM? OR CAN WE JUST STAY AT CS 1.5? PLEASE ADVISE. THIS STEAM SOFTWARE SUCKS BALLS!!

On the contrary, I kinda like it. Judging Steam when they're getting arguably their highest load isn't exactly fair. Give it a few days, make sure you've got things configured right and then judge away.

Fsck.. I get to the counterstrike menu, if I try to go to any of the menu;s on the left it just dies.. Steam sucks. It's like the whole game is run off the internet, like CS isn't even on your comp (even though it is)

I got the spashscreen and freeze a few times, now I can look at servers and connect, but it gets stuck at the "verifying resources" part. It seems to get farther and farther along every time though...

On the contrary, I think it's extremely fair to judge Steam under such a high load. An auto-update based system like Steam is going to see a significant number of its users attempt to grab updates at once; all the active users(70K at any given point) are going to have to. While on any given day, there will be a handful of people buying a Valve game, or a handful of people playing it after having not played it for a while, this is a minority, and a group even the crappiest system can handle. A repeat of the Steam launch is not acceptable, the system must be able to handle a worst-case senario, otherwise as far as the users are concerned, the system has failed, and they can't play their games.

Seems as though the updates via steam (not new releases) go very quickly and smoothly. I only had to wait maybe 1 or 2 minutes for each of the 11 updates they did to 1.6 beta, and that was all downloading time, not crash time.

Only one question...is the 265.7MB torrented RAR file linked earlier the same thing as the 380MB steaminstall_cs file hosted over at fileplanet? Steam can't update SH*T on my box and I have a fairly decent 2mbit+ cable link. I've left it on all evening, all night, all day today and reconnected numerous times.

The Steam software itself is full of bugs (wasn't there a beta to fix these kinds of things?) and I'm losing a lot of respect for Valve. I exit and 10 minutes later notice the steam.exe process is still in use, using 22mb of memory. Update to CS keeps timing out...after the third retry I got a fatal exception call from steam.

Now I'm just trying to get the cache files with HL 1.1.1.2 and CS 1.6 elsewhere...fileplanet blows (unless you got $$$) and this RAR file seems on the small side (how does 380mb already compressed go down further to 265.7mb???)

Yes it is the same as the fileplanet file. I got it in 1h 00m 45s via bit torrent, and that was without the stupid 86 minute lineup I was in over at fileplanet (my torrent finished before I even started downloading at fp).

I didn't actually need the files though as steam managed to update itself.

I got a very fast download on fileshack 2 days ago. It said 70 minute wait, but I only got 30 minutes. And then the download was maxed out at 100.

Most custom models will work, but I've found that a lot of servers have restricted custom skins. So far I found one server that allows those, so I just went ahead and deleted all my customs. Oh well I guess defaults aren't THAT bad.

After installing, uninstalling, and reinstalling Steam about 5 times, it finally decided to work. After that it was all smooth sailing. Now it works fine, only problem is that it takes about 10 seconds to start, but I guess I can live with that. :p
