CS:S & The Gun Market

4-6 years ago, Valve introduced the gun market, which would adjust the prices of guns--popular ones would rise in value, and unpopular ones would be very cheap.

I have googled around about this phenomenon, but I have only found the announcement and various forum reactions to it--has Valve or anyone else released a study about its results?

Never heard of this. Are you saying that b/c of the game CS:S, the price of real guns would be affected, due to the popularity from the games?

No, the price of in game guns. Everyone runs around buying awps and deagles so they become super expensive, while other guns that aren't as popular (mac 10, ump) drop in price, encouraging players to use them. In theory anyway. At least thats the way I remembered it.

that doesn't make sense though. Since the price on good guns would go up. People start using other guns, they go up in price and the good guns drop a bit. But as soon the the price difference works out people will go back to the good guns. They should take current gun usage data and permanently change the price of guns but not to extremes. Then reprice them after balance changes.

I dont know about the game but since you guys keep bringing this up:

In real life guns arent priced by popularity but by manufacturing costs. The Austrians have a very efficient factory and Glocks are relatively cheap to make. If they were priced according to popularity they'd probably double in cost overnight.

And no special forces agency would purchase less of something just cuz the price shifted. They get the very best items they like regardless of cost.

In game should be the same. You use what you want, not what others think you should have,

They're popular because of their pricepoint. I don't think $1000 glocks will be anywhere near as popular as they are now. Especially with other competition at around $500 with springfield, smith & wesson, and sig.

I remember this. The price of the deagle, m4, ak, and awp went ridiculously high. People were just used to those guns and wanted to use them even if other guns had a better cost/benefit ration.

This made the game more unbalanced. With the standard prices, the losing team could still afford the best assault rifles in the game (m4/ak) after a couple of rounds of losing, but with the gun market prices, only the winning team could afford them.

I think they should've just lowered the price of guns that never got used. 1100 is about right for a tmp/mac10. They would be a nice alternative to an mp5 at that price.
