its the same argument with any competitively played game (quake,CS,SC). There is always going to be sick players that dont cheat, and all the noobs call them cheaters. Just get better!

CS Source sucks. It always has sucked. Terrible port of the original to a new engine, and I find that those who play it aren't the "original" type of player, but rather a younger crowd who didn't cut their teeth on Goldsrc.

CS1.6 on the other hand is a classic. Still playing it after ~10 years. I actually prefer TFC to TF2 as well.

Like all online games, there are good and bad servers, but mostly bad. Find well maintained ones that have settings and maps you like and put them into your favorites and play on them. Or join a community of players and play with them exclusively. This is what you should do if you like CS and want to play it.

Game is still super fun if you have a decent server to play on. Even if you don't have a decent server it's easy to find a good gun game to play.

KT

++ gun game. It's fun even though I get owned. I work my way up but I often get stuck at the TMP since it's such a horrible gun.

But even then I only play gun game once in a while and I never touch CSS other than that. I mean, there are people who have been playing for literally a decade out there, and they all want to shoot me in the head. I can't compete. Sometimes I manage to hit someone in the body, if I'm lucky.

I stopped playing CS when TF2 came out. I'd been playing since the B5 version, so at least 8 years or so.

I love CS:S, but unfortunately the game has evolved too much for my tastes. The last time I tried to play, I couldn't find a server that wasn't trying to download custom maps and stupid ass sound effects, not to mention all kinds of other crappy mods that made the experience horrible.

I'd love to play some again, but on a clean server with default maps and default weapons and default everything. Just twitch skill and strategy. That's when it was fun.

People call me a hacker all the time because I can easily go 3:1, 4:1 without breaking a sweat. I can do instant 90º/180º spinning headshots, instant headshots popping out of a hallway, headshots down long A in D2 and other such shenanigans. I don't hack. Because of this, I can only play on a few servers because everywhere else, I'll have to defend myself from the idiots who voteban me and dumbass server admins.
I used to be good like that :(

I tried playing the other week and got 2 kills and died a ton in ~20 minutes of game play.

Ah, the Gun Game. I should have mentioned that this is CS:S's only saving grace.

I'm with tokie, CS:S isn't really an upgrade. Honestly I think the last good version was 1.3, before the hideous hitbox changes that reduced the skill level required to make headshots. Before that, if you were damned good, you could be competitive with just a P228.

I still love playing CS:S on occasion. Always return to the same Server where people know me and Hackers get banned in a minute of showing up. Best Multiplayer FPS game ever.

I play on a specific gun game server regularly, yes.

Same here. Gun game has been an enjoyable mod to the usual CS formula. Crazy to think I've been playing some variation of CS for over 10 years now.

1.3 Pfft, please. The last good version of CS was Quake.

but admit it, a lot of people do hack. Well I would estimate at least one player on the server hacks, that's why I don't play it no more.

The game was unplayable before valve introduced that filter. It was such a nightmare. You didn't play the game, you just stared at the screen while it downloaded simpsons sounds that you already had stored in a different folder.

It has been awhile since I played, but honestly I never really thought that many people hacked. If they were hacking, they sure weren't making it obvious. It'd be hard to detect a smart wallhacker (although, that never stopped most players from accusing players that had headphones on from hacking) but aimbotters were few and far between when I played.

You probably just suck honestly. This game was never friendly to people that weren't at least semi-obsessive about playing it, which often made me wonder why it became so popular. The game has a painful learning curve (one life per round coupled with super easy deaths and no health powerups) and it has been out a LOOONNG time. Go play any FPS that is past its prime where the game of the week players have largely moved on...its insane. You only have people left that have played the game forever and have seriously mastered it. I remember when I went back to play RtCW after a few years it was as if everyone was 10 times as good. The truth is the existing player base just shrunk and only the old hand players were left.

LOL...do you know how to buy armor? When I was first playing I thought everyone was cheating until I figured out you had to buy armor. (Give me a break, all the player models have armor on to start with)

This. CS 1.6 (and to a lesser degree, CSS) are incredibly deep games. You have to separate casual pub players from competitive players playing matches/scrims.

When a competitive player drops into a pub they will absolutely dominate everyone, entire teams etc, because their aim/tactics is so refined from playing hours a day. I used to be able to do 50/2 etc. in 1.6 pubs when I played and I was not even that good (only got to CAL-M back in the day).

Now when I hop on a random pub server I am absolutely worthless since all I play is pub TF2 which is nowhere near as aim centric as CS/Quake. I wouldn't even try a pug, it would just be embarassing.

On a side note, what commands/mode do people play 1.6 in on widescreen LCDs? Ever since I got my Dell 24inch a few years ago, I have found that goldsrc games do not "feel" right regardless of sensitivity. Maybe it's input lag and going from 120hz vsync CRT to 60hz vsync LCD. I used to dominate DOD 1.3 pubs with the kar but now I can't hit anything. TF2 feels fine though.

Agreed. Saw the following on some forum. Casual player wouldn't even be thinking about stuff like this.

See, it's stupid shit like this that galvanizes the "new" gamers against the "old" gamers.

Just because you like the old one doesn't mean the new one sucks. Just because the old one is dead and you're bitter about it doesn't mean the new one sucks.

I played CS starting back at 1.4 and still continue to play it and I'd rather play CS:S than any previous version. There's more innovation in CS:S than there is in all the previous versions. The modding tools are a LOT easier to use. Levels are a lot easier to put together, and faster. The skins look great, not archaic. I can go on and on and on.

Just because someone didn't start playing that game when you did doesn't mean they don't know what they game "is really about" or "what it used to be like." Just because someone didn't join the fuckin beta on day one doesn't mean their opinion is somehow less than yours.

Fuckin elitists piss me off.

When I want some comic relief in my life, I play CS:S and make sure my headset is plugged in. The comments, conversations and stupid idiocy make me laugh so hard. It's still a fun game to play with friends and talk shit back and forth. I'll be playing this for years to come, until Counterstrike 3 comes out...if ever.

CSS has always been really difficult for me for some reason. I use to play it but never really had any kind of good score. Hell, I still kinda suck against bots. Most other FPS's I'm fine at though.
