Here are some tips I've picked up that have helped me. Know them and as always, practice makes almost perfect, even if the game isn't. If anyone else would like to contribute some, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

-When using an unfamiliar weapon, fire a clip against a wall so that you can see its spray pattern. Use this pattern to compensate for kickback when spraying.

-Spraying is more effective that shot bursts at close range. It is more effective if you start spraying in the chest and move down to the knees as you spray.

-Use 1-2 shot bursts for medium to long range and aim for the neck or head. If you strafe to the left, fire at the enemy at the same time you strafe back to the right for a brief period of good accuracy. This also happens when moving forwards and backwards.

Flash your teammates and steal their guns when they die. :p

Actually when you awp press the 2 strafe buttons at the same time and you'll stop for a second and your aim will be super duper goodness.

Use your teammates as an extra pair of eyes, watch what they are reacting to.

Crouch while scouting for great accuracy.

Strafe and then rapidly change direction while scouting for a brief moment of accuracy.

Coordinate with teammates to nade stack to counter a rush (deadly effective if the other team are n00bs)

Fix your rate/interp/update settings so hitboxes are accurate.

Spraying and praying is a n00b tactic. Spraying is not.

Camping is for n00bs, unless it's your objective (T camping on de_dust2 = n00b)

God I just hate that :)

Tip:
Play on gun game severs to get yourself familiarized with all the weapons, just in case.

communication works just as well as watching them. listen to the surroundings and where grenades are going off, those can give you a clue as to where a group of the opposing team is at.

The biggest problem some people have is they just don't pay attention to whats going on in the game.

You'll have a bunch of CT rush the front in Office and none of them will pay attention to their radar. If they did they'd notice their teammates were dead and they should be turning around for a counter attack. Or someone will see their teammate die right in front of them and not grasp where he died from and suffer the same fate. I still can not understand why I see soooo many people who have a teammate die RIGHT next to them and not even know it. To go along with this, I'll be specing someone and can easily hear someone coming from a certain direction 3-4 seconds before they get there...and the person has absolutely no clue. Guess they have their sound off? Or you'll be specing someone and can plainly see an enemy on their screen, yet they'll look right by them like they weren't even there.

It's not like it takes that much more effort to just pay attention, or maybe it does?

Stay back and let your teammate go first where you think someone might be. When/if he dies rush then kill the bad guy while hes reloading. Or rush and just steal his kill. Both work great.

LOL j/k(well I've done it sometimes :D)

Sticking together is a better plan than trying to play the lone hero. Would you rather be in a large group that runs across 2 or 3 guys, or be alone when you run into a horde of people?

Take time to line up your shots at medium to long range. Taking the time to line up a single shot for a one hit kills takes less time than spraying and hoping that 4 or 5 of your 30 shots hit and reloading if they don't.

Smoke works offensively and defensively. Use it when running into a wide opening (such as the garage door in assualt) so that all the people looking there can't see the rush, or use it when you have a few people coming towards your hiding spot so they can't see where you are drop smoke on a narrow doorway and as one person comes out, keep shooting. You'll likely kill or damage 1 or 2 following them... wider spots on offense, narrower on defense.

Pull the same tricks 2 or 3 rounds in a row and the enemy will catch on fast.

Learn how to jump the longest possible distances and heights and take full advantage of it.

There is power in numbers when laying in wait. People are usually more focusing on where they are going than what is above them. Use teammates to reach higher ledges and such.

If you're going to camp, put yourself in a position where people run past and you can shoot them in the back. If you face them head on, then their goal is to be where you are and they'll mow you down trying to get there. If you wait to hit them in the back, their goal is to run away... they'll keep running rather than turn around and will likely die before rounding a corner... if you are a good shot.

Leave no corner unchecked. It's inevitbly where a person will be hiding.

Use hostages as cover when rescuing them. If a couple of them die, you're not the one that loses cash. It's also funny when people get kicked for hostage killing.

Play A LOT, I mean...at least one hour a day. Arrange a week where you only play with a certain type of gun so you can become good with it (not the awp, you can become "good" with that in about 10min) But you will be pleasantly surprised when you can down an m4 with a desert eagle. Use radar A LOT, find good tactical positions that make you hard to see to enemies, but you can see them clearly. An example of this would be in d2 when ct's decide to rush through long a, you stay crouched behind the car in t spawn and shoot through the window (thanks css crouch height update :) Never stop and wait for enemies, always keep moving. Use a mic, no one will really read what you say about enemy positions. Use flashes, nades, smoke, all the time. Play on one map a lot, learn it like the back of your hand, then move on to the next map. Learn where people awp from, and smoke their position so they cant see. (example: middle double doors in d2, smoke those, then you can rush short a) Dont play on servers that have a ton of poeple, it only slows down your learning, and forces you to either camp, or die when rushing. Deathmatch is good for practicing reflexes, and getting the hang of any gun you want. I play on d2 a lot, and I know exactly where to bounce off every grenade, where everyone camps, pretty much everything. If you get spotted by an awper, use flashes, smoke to cover your movments. Usually, if they are rushed, they panic and you can kill them off easily. If you see someone run behind a wooden box, follow them with your crosshair and keep shooting through the box. I find it that its almost an instinct for most to throe a grenade at the cover that you run behind, so if you run behind a corner for cover...run FAR away from it, 50% of the time, you will have a grenade following you. Another thing about this...this is a perfect time to kill the person that is throwing the nade. Run behind the cover for 1 second, as they see this, they will be taking ou ttheir grenade, and throwing it. During this time, you can run out, and shoot them while they cannot defend themselves. Remember, no one likes an awp whore, and no one likes a camper, dont do it. Another neat trick is when you run into an enemy in close combat, they will automatically try to shoot you somewhere from the waist up. Use this to your advantage, and Right when you see them, crouch so they will be shooting over you. Thseo few moments that they are confused and aiming down...will give u a change to plant a few in their face. NEVER JUMP WHEN SHOT AT! this gives them a BETTER chance of hitting you because you are following their recoil. You can camp...but only when its to complete the objective (camping the bomb sites when ct, camping with the bomb, or camp with the hostages.) Lastly, play during a time of day when you have the most energy. Personally, Im better between 7pm-12am than before. Get a good night of sleep, if you dont get this, caffiene wont help much.

sry for the lack of organization...I just typed whatever I was thinking. Hope that helped :)

Actually, not a bad strategy. Well, not that exactly, but when you're low on funds, just by a flack jacket and stay with a large group. Your stock pistol will help and you can grab the first weapon you find on the ground.

Learn how to throw grenades and flashes. Another words, I play only office and 99% as CT. All to often when CT's are trying to take the hallway with the 2 coke machines, they'll expose their body, then arm the grenade/flash, get shot, die and probably not even throw the grenade/flash. Learn to arm it before exposing yourself, then do a quick strafe ( only 1/2 of your body gets exposed, with practice you can be 1/3 exposed) toss, and pop back to cover, you usually don't get hit. Practice on your own made up server with no bots. I can solo that hallway if there are 3 T's, maybe 4 depending on location camping that hallway. It takes both flashes and grenade use, but games usually take 4-5 CT deaths to get that hallway.

Learn to use angles when bouncing grenades/flashes off walls to achieve your goal.

If you die early, free camera around, if available from server settings, to see how oponents are set up. See if you can find a hole in their current style. Since I only play office and T's regularly come through garage ([Qosis] server :)), I see if they are guarding the double windows to backyard, if not, I flank them next round.

Aim head level at all times, going up stairs or planning to go through that window, aim at head level where they'll be coming out of. Your paranoid firing reaction just might nail that quick headshot.

Cabinets (from office) are head level, aim just above it and you can score a headshot.

Avoid congested areas, if you see 4 of your teammates in small area, back off, just so you don't get blocked when a grenade/flash comes around the corner or one of them charging in.

If you are like me, you play one map, one team enough, you start to come up with new ideas, my newest is bouncing a flash off a dumpster so it comes up head level to rushing T's, flashing every single one. Creating blocking teamates and a couple kills for me :D

"It is more effective if you start spraying in the chest and move down to the knees as you spray. "

did not know this, when ever I happen to run into someone I always spray going up and more often than not I get killed even when I shoot first. Will try to remember to spray down.

I also did not know the momentary increase in accuracy when changing direction while straffing or when pressing the both left and right straff keys together.

does this trick only work with the AWP and Scout? I never use the sniper rifles since I suck at them.

I am more of a M4, MP5 type of player.

Thanks for the tips been playing CS:S for the past 2 months only (just got broadband) and it takes me a while to warm up. I usually get killed 5 straight times when starting but always manage to get back to 1:1 kill ratio if not a little better by the end of the round.

The strafe trick works with any weapon. The MP5 is very accurate; check the spray pattern on the wall. You don't need to compensate too much to get a headshot, however, it will require more than one shot from that gun, in the head to kill your opponent. Stupid, but true.

I never understood people who would just play one side or one map... that kind of defeats the purpose of the game. Sure you get great on one map, but what about the hundreds of other maps out there?

Come play on the //RS server if you guys want. 216.52.143.47:27015

Mildly competative 100Tic pub with stats. Pretty much the only pub I play on. We're currently deciding whether or not to keep the dynamic pricing. Appearently the deagle will be close to $7000 next week ! I'll post the ip of a sweet gungame server when I get home around 8pm CST tonight

I play on only a few maps, cause those are the ones I find fun. Dust, Dust2, Office, and about 2 others whose names I can't remember.

I think dynamic pricing is flawed as it is implimented. Would you ever see a 3800+ be more expensive than a 4200+. No of course not. Because the 4200 is better and they will always price it more expensive. So why then should the AK be more expensive than the Kreig if the Kreig is a more accurate weapon. Clearly it is better, so why not jack up the price so that more profit is made when people buy it. Likewise, it makes no sense for the M4a to be more expensive than the Bullup.

The problem is that people are so used to buying these weapons. And the market isn't even realistic anyway, since no new products drive the market which is also a part of the supply and demand pricing.

dynamic pricing can go to hell....the point where I really got mad was when it costed more than an m4....seriously....thats the other extreme of unrealistic. A real deagle costs around 2k. If anything, terrorists should get a discount ;)

Heres a good tip.
Get a pair of good headphones. Turn the volume on those puppies up. Crouch when you walk and you will have sound hack in a sense.

I use my 4.1 speakers in stereo but I have them positioned so that it "sounds" 3D. I can usually hear them reload/pick up a weapon/run.

i stopped playing CS shortly after they took out bunny-hopping. my clan was in CAL-i, we were damn good.

all i suggest is: if you want to get good, practice a lot. over a couple hours a day. some of the greatest clans in CS would "train" 10+ hours/day (ridiculous).

get some good headphones. hearing what side people are coming from is key.

run with the knife? does that still make you run faster?

memorize all the maps. this is key.

in team play: communication

IMO, the pricing system isn't flawed. I think the prices don't make sense because people are too dumb to realize that a $7000 deagle isn't worth it.
