CS:GO - CPU Choice

z1ggy

I've read CS:GO is a heavy CPU intense game, unlike most which are GPU intensive. I play CS:GO more than any game, although I do plan on getting into the new BF1, and potentially play some single player games like Hitman.

I'm currently making a new build that I plan on getting soon. It has an i5-6500, H110 and gtx 1070 as my main components. This gives me a pretty solid gaming setting up matched with my 27'' 1440p 144hz monitor. However, I'm somewhat considering waiting on the build a bit in order to save up for an i7-6700k, z110 and matching CPU cooler. I could probably OC on air up to 4.3 or 4.4Ghz. I can't find any benches for CS:GO which compares the 6500 to the 6700k OC'ed.

Is it worth the extra money for this?

For CS:GO? Not a chance. I just recently had this debate and opted for a 6600K. Is the 6700k faster? Sure. Will it be tangible (I.E make one game playable where the i5 could not play it), I highly doubt it. By that time you will need a new machine, not just a processor.

I think my question is more focused on FPS. For example.. the i5 6500 is what... 3.2 or 3.3 Ghz stock speed? Say it normally ran the game at 110 FPS. I'm trying to figure out of the i7 would run it at a significantly higher FPS to make the game smoother, say over 125 FPS.

Possibly, but it's mainly due to the clock speed and not the jump from i5 to i7. You can always bump up to 6600k and overclock it while still saving some coin. Mine is set at 4.2ghz and could probably go higher.

On air?

Also what mobo? I don't ever SLI so only need 1 PCIe 3 slot. Also, don't ever plan on more than 16gb ram, so only need max of two slots.

Yes, on air. This is the mobo I chose, but it had a rebate and combo discount:

I think it only cost me $50 or $60 after everything. Newegg is pretty good at supplying filters for minimum specs (I.E you can check off you want 2 ram slots only). Just make sure you get a Z series, H or B for example cannot overclock.

Yeah it looks like for CSGO, with a 6500 and 1070, I'll be way over 144 FPS on 1080p. I guess the question is, is it worth the $140 or so for the OC set up for a game like BF1 or Hitman?

People are reporting 4.7ghz with a good CPU cooler.

I honestly don't think you'll notice a big difference, but if you're going to push for 144fps minimum, having a fast CPU will not hurt you. Again, I don't think an i7 will give you a minimum 144fps where the 6600k would not assuming the same clock speed. The i7 just has a convenience factor of being 4.0ghz out of the box, but you'd have to overclock that too anyway.

The only way you can say CS:GO is CPU intensive, is if you are aiming for 300-400 FPS. The CPU might be what holds back more FPS, but it's not CPU intensive.

Yeah it's pointless to have 300, I was just trying to determine is one CPU gave 144 min easier than the other. I could deal with less FPS on Hitman, but it would be nice to get as close to, if not over 144 as possible on BF1 while maxed out. However I realize that will be more about the GPU.
