It's odd. I was able to play this morning. I only played 1 or 2 rounds though as I had to go to work, but now I'm disconnected from every server I try to join...

Okay, I've done some reading on the steam forums and apparently valve has disabled all the accounts that were new as of this new release. So we're fux0r3d until the real version comes out.
Possible goodness for some of you:
If you have an old steam account, you can log in using that one and it will let you play. Too bad I can't remember my old login...

Here's how I understand it from the other forums.
You make a steam account -> you get a steam ID
Valve stopped giving out new IDs, and has disabled all IDs made with steam 2.0 beta (used for CS 1.6 beta)
If you have an old steam ID, you can use that to play CS 1.6
Are you sure you've never used steam before?
I haven't been able to connect at all since this morning, nor have a LOT of people.

Okay, all that stuff I posted that I heard from the steam forums is BS. I just played on a number of different servers. Fun stuff 🙂

Looks like we need another Steam 2.0 BETA topic for you guys to rant in.
First of all, it looks like Art of War Central will be providing content servers for Steam, as to help with the load. Who knows when the servers will go up, but it's a good sign. You can find a full press release over on AoWC's site.
No word on when the Steam 2.0 BETA will be officially released. Steam will allow you to download the BETA version of CS 1.6, which I have previewed here. VALVe did screw up pretty big by having so little bandwidth for so many users (story), but that's the past and now we have to wait for Steam to be fixed. Also, the chances of a cs16.exe download are zero, since this is the BETA version and not the final version.
In case you're wondering why CS-Nation and many other sites haven't posted the Steam 2.0 BETA, let me give you the inside scoop.
Right now, VALVe has a heart symbol drawn on some marker whiteboard. Inside of the heart is the proper noun "CS-Nation," and other sites like "FileShack." Outside of the heart would be sites like "Xxon's CS site downlaod steam hear !" And you have to feel sorry for sites outside of the poorly-drawn heart. It's a sad tale, because they won't get any loving from VALVe! Ahh, shucks: looks like another few months of the copy and paste routine.
Well, it's quite possible that I made that all up. The point is, we're not posting Steam until VALVe asks us to. Why? A few reasons:
» The program doesn't work 90% of the time, so there isn't a huge point in downloading it. A lot of players are patient (read: social experiment failures) and have waited hours to play the game for a bit. CS 1.6 is actually pretty cool so I don't blame them, but for the other people it's really not fun waiting for everything to download and then getting an error, etc.
» We don't want to sever any ties with VALVe by acting like idiots. The point is, if we were posting Steam's latest BETA left and right a preview like this might never happen for CS 1.7 and this page would be filled with baseless, unconfirmed rumors for CS 1.7 rather than facts. Of course, we weren't threatened with anything, but why even risk it?
The fact is that this site is better for not posting the BETA. That's right, better. It's the difference between, let me make a completely nerd analogy, CNET.com and "Alf's Microsoft SOFTWAREZ Leak Downloadzz & Newz." And I'm sure Alf gets plenty of hits, but who would you trust? After I earn your trust I am going to steal all your money, but that is besides the point.
New comment rules: anyone who posts a link to download the Steam 2.0 BETA will be banned. Also, if you even mention Steam in a news topic not related to CS 1.6 you will be banned too. I'm glad our comments system is so active recently, but please keep it civil.
