Crytek removes Sandbox Editor from retail Crysis 2, even though it was in beta leak.

Perhaps they'll redeem themselves by offering it as a free download like Bethesda does for the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games.

can we say pay DLC?

Reduce competition for DLC or make the editor available as DLC? Cannot see it being worth their time for the latter as only a handful of modders would buy it, unless you needed it to play 3rd-party maps.

Guys, how are you going to make a map using a 360 controller? Get with the program. :/

Not unexpected. When Crysis Warhead came out, it didn't have it either. The editor will come in a bigger SDK a little bit down the road, just like it did with warhead.

They're also considering just releasing a free to use version of the engine+editor and just say anything sold commercially has to pay a royalty. That way mod makers can have standalone mods.

I hope Crysis 2 bombs so damn hard, or at least sell under 3 million copies.

Crytek goes and makes it for the consoles since that is where the money is, or so they say. I say under 3 million cause that is roughly what Crysis 1 on the PC sold. Of course they will just blame it on piracy and shit but I want to see them get kicked in the nuts for being jackasses.

lolz.. my thoughts exactly.. Crytek has bent over to the console crowd for $$$ and it's as simple as that.

Unfortunately, the nutmegs at DICE gave the canard of complexity of their proprietary Frostbite 2 engine when asked about modding tools for BF3.

Time to start a crowdsourcing game company.. hmm..

Was there ever any promise of an editor to be released? Has it really come to the point where companies are expected to release modding tools for every game they release?

How do you know that they won't release it after the retail launch?

PC gamers are a fickle, unhappy lot. It's more fun to simply blame everything on "teh kidd13 cons0les!" instead of actually applying some logic here or there. ;)

We'll "do the helicopter" in front of the Kinect, and the map editor will subtly incorporate the artistry of our body movement into a map. Then the Kinect will automatically upload the video on Youtube and link to Facebook so we can "Like" each other's creative mapmaking efforts.

I can't wait to be able to buy the editor on XBox Live Arcade with some Microsoft Points and Tweet all about it to my friends without even having to stop playing Farmville!

I love the future of gaming <3

i quoted myself. read it. this is a non issue and nothing to get upset about. they want a huge mod community, and they want modders to have more power than just an 'editor bundled with the game'. From what I understand, they're working to release the entire engine with the editor so content can be created without crysis.

For lots of money/sales, you need a popular game.

A popular game needs a large following / community developers

A large following is maintained / grown as content grows.

Content grows either via a lot of effort from the original developers or by the many free working community developers.

Community developers needs tools to work with.

So unless Crytek has a few map mapers on hand to release new maps every 1-2 months, a toolbox/sandbox is something that should be released in a timly fashion.

so, no, it is not expected, but it is in Crytek's best interest long term.

Quote yourself all you want, your crytek damage control isn't working. Anyone who has ever modded a game knows the inherent problem with a UDK like editor. It includes no existing assets. Therefore, it is very difficult for inexperienced modders to work with. Suppose I just want to modify the time of day in a crysis 2 map so it looks better, or if I want to add a weapon into the game. None of these things can be done with standalone sdk.

The use of a tool like UDK is designed for total conversions only, where all assets must be created from scratch. These things take years, if not decades, to finish. UDK includes only the bare minimum for starting your own game. A total conversion is MUCH more than a mod. I can't believe you don't understand the difference between these two. Even if they do release a standalone editor the modding community for Crysis 2 is finished because none of it's files can be edited.

This is why people still develop mods for UT3 despite the release of UDK, because it's much easier to work with when you don't have to make things from scratch.
