I got crysis for xmas and ive been playing it for the past two hours, i haven't gotten far because ive been pre-occupied with other stuff. This game is awesome, if you liked farcry you will like this. Heres what ive liked so far.
Nature and the landscape
I spent the first 30 minutes or so messing with nature and the landscape, theres this turtle near where you land, i accidentally shot it so i dragged it around with me for ages until i had to let go to get in the jeep. The jeeps just like the farcry one, but when you shoot trees they fall over, had a lot of fun with that until a tree landed on my jeep and blew it up. Next thing i came across whilest in my jeep was a flock of birds, im thinking "yeah theyll fly away if i try and mow emm down... lame.. like every other game i try this in" So i tried to mow them down, looked back and wow! great success! a good chunk were flattened, the rest were walking about then i realized these birds cant fly!! HAHA! So i shot the rest as they ran about, that was awesome, thats the kind of bird that should be in games, the easy to hit kind. Also i took down some of the flying variety very easily with this laser sighted gun i found, much easier than in farcry where i spent a good 5 minutes with the chaingun shooting them down, took ages. Anyways after that i decided to be friendly to the animals again, my second pet that i picked up was a chicken, but there dosent seem to be a "put down gently" button, because when i wanted the guy to put chicken down he did a HE-MAN and threw it across the vietcong camp i was in, chicken didn't survive. The guy throwing things insane distances led me onto the next cool thing i discovered about crysis.
The Suit!!
Next big thing i discovered was the suit, i now understood why my guy threw the chicken a mile away, maximum strength was on! So i tried out the other things the suit can do. Maximum armor is useful, a good default setting, maximum speed is great too, really fast sprinting! But i think the best ability is the cloaking ability, its not unlimited and you cant run for ages cloaked, but remember those times in farcry where your trying to sneak around a camp? and you want to run from building A to B quietly to avoid an all out war like the last 4 camps you strolled though but its really difficult to do that without being seen, well cloak comes in handy here! You can even cloak and sneak up on someone then grab them (seems you can grab everything in this game) then turn on maximum strength and throw the vietcong badguy away! Its like you are the goddamn predator, HE-MAN! and road runner rolled into one guy! Frickin awesome. Anyways thats stuff ive liked in the game so far, moving onto performance things.
Performance
Well.... with an opteron 170 @ 2.0ghz and 4GB of ram and a 7900GTO (basically a GTX but maybe 5-10% slower) i expected to run it on medium, it defaults to medium so i guess crytek expected the same as well. Nah, didnt work out for me, medium wasent a slideshow it was just... a bit sluggish, so i had to turn it down to low for a speed im used to. Good thing about low is that it dosent look awful, looks ok, fine, mediocre. Better than FEAR looked thats for damn sure, so im not too miffed about being on low. Only thing is that AA seems to require a better shader setting than low, so if i want AA i cant use the low shader setting and using higher ones makes the game sluggish again, they shouldve added some kind of low quality AA or something. I can see myself replaying this again on a geforce 10k with a core 3 octo just like i did with farcry. Played farcry with a 9800pro and 3200+ originally, replayed it later on my current rig.
Controls
Theyre good, they allow me to use every key i want, including numpad, i saw the intro and have also read about the suit settings and thought to myself "crap, more damn buttons to remember" but they way they have the 5 different suit options is fantastic, just hold down the middle mouse button (or any button you want i suppose) and move the mouse in the direction of the icon you want. It works really well, even in combat. Theres been too many times (battlefield 2) that ive wonder what button im meant to push, jumping out of a plane and then wondering where parachute is??? Or looking for the prone button and hitting throw grenade instead to die to my own grenade 5 seconds later. Crysis controls are uncomplicated and the suit ones are well thought out.
So overall, im liking this game so far, even though i have it set on low its been fun and i havent even gotten far yet. Hopefully it will remain as fun throughout!
