Crysis first impressions

I got crysis for xmas and ive been playing it for the past two hours, i haven't gotten far because ive been pre-occupied with other stuff. This game is awesome, if you liked farcry you will like this. Heres what ive liked so far.

Nature and the landscape
I spent the first 30 minutes or so messing with nature and the landscape, theres this turtle near where you land, i accidentally shot it so i dragged it around with me for ages until i had to let go to get in the jeep. The jeeps just like the farcry one, but when you shoot trees they fall over, had a lot of fun with that until a tree landed on my jeep and blew it up. Next thing i came across whilest in my jeep was a flock of birds, im thinking "yeah theyll fly away if i try and mow emm down... lame.. like every other game i try this in" So i tried to mow them down, looked back and wow! great success! a good chunk were flattened, the rest were walking about then i realized these birds cant fly!! HAHA! So i shot the rest as they ran about, that was awesome, thats the kind of bird that should be in games, the easy to hit kind. Also i took down some of the flying variety very easily with this laser sighted gun i found, much easier than in farcry where i spent a good 5 minutes with the chaingun shooting them down, took ages. Anyways after that i decided to be friendly to the animals again, my second pet that i picked up was a chicken, but there dosent seem to be a "put down gently" button, because when i wanted the guy to put chicken down he did a HE-MAN and threw it across the vietcong camp i was in, chicken didn't survive. The guy throwing things insane distances led me onto the next cool thing i discovered about crysis.

The Suit!!
Next big thing i discovered was the suit, i now understood why my guy threw the chicken a mile away, maximum strength was on! So i tried out the other things the suit can do. Maximum armor is useful, a good default setting, maximum speed is great too, really fast sprinting! But i think the best ability is the cloaking ability, its not unlimited and you cant run for ages cloaked, but remember those times in farcry where your trying to sneak around a camp? and you want to run from building A to B quietly to avoid an all out war like the last 4 camps you strolled though but its really difficult to do that without being seen, well cloak comes in handy here! You can even cloak and sneak up on someone then grab them (seems you can grab everything in this game) then turn on maximum strength and throw the vietcong badguy away! Its like you are the goddamn predator, HE-MAN! and road runner rolled into one guy! Frickin awesome. Anyways thats stuff ive liked in the game so far, moving onto performance things.

Performance
Well.... with an opteron 170 @ 2.0ghz and 4GB of ram and a 7900GTO (basically a GTX but maybe 5-10% slower) i expected to run it on medium, it defaults to medium so i guess crytek expected the same as well. Nah, didnt work out for me, medium wasent a slideshow it was just... a bit sluggish, so i had to turn it down to low for a speed im used to. Good thing about low is that it dosent look awful, looks ok, fine, mediocre. Better than FEAR looked thats for damn sure, so im not too miffed about being on low. Only thing is that AA seems to require a better shader setting than low, so if i want AA i cant use the low shader setting and using higher ones makes the game sluggish again, they shouldve added some kind of low quality AA or something. I can see myself replaying this again on a geforce 10k with a core 3 octo just like i did with farcry. Played farcry with a 9800pro and 3200+ originally, replayed it later on my current rig.

Controls
Theyre good, they allow me to use every key i want, including numpad, i saw the intro and have also read about the suit settings and thought to myself "crap, more damn buttons to remember" but they way they have the 5 different suit options is fantastic, just hold down the middle mouse button (or any button you want i suppose) and move the mouse in the direction of the icon you want. It works really well, even in combat. Theres been too many times (battlefield 2) that ive wonder what button im meant to push, jumping out of a plane and then wondering where parachute is??? Or looking for the prone button and hitting throw grenade instead to die to my own grenade 5 seconds later. Crysis controls are uncomplicated and the suit ones are well thought out.

So overall, im liking this game so far, even though i have it set on low its been fun and i havent even gotten far yet. Hopefully it will remain as fun throughout!

Its a really good game I'm glad you are enjoying it. The suit offers so many ways to go about things, I usually go into a camp and try not to be spotted while I silently take out all the bad guys with stealth mode/darts/whatever else I need. You get to do more cool things as the game progresses and experience a few different things (won't spoil it 🙂). Have fun!

Just wait... lol, just wait =)

Once you get past the first kinda tutorial stages, it just gets insane!

I forget the level, but it's called assult or something where your rolling around in a tank with this .....(spoilers, i won't do it)..... it's so epic...

This game was so EPIC!

CRYSIS FTW

I loved it as well, started playing again on Delta-highest diff. setting-and decided to try for a stealth approach to most of the bases and objectives. Its a blast and having different approaches and routes makes the game very replayable. I can play on 1600x1200 at all high and while it looks great I cannot help to wonder what it would look like if hardware could really play it with a ton of AA/AF

Dont forget to use the darts, even if they hit the guy in the leg he will go down.

I got it for Christmas as well, and I have thoroughly enjoyed playing it.

Running a Q6600, 4GB, 512MB 8800 GTS, and Vista 64bit. It looks incredible. Gameplay is awesome. I heard the game was short, so I upped the difficulty. LOL, I am getting myself in all kinds of sticky situations.

Very fun, I am impressed.

Great game, i"m playing it the second time now on Delta. The graphics are so good sometimes I need to pause to watch the sunset (I'm not kidding).

One of my favorite things to do is grab a NPK soldier while cloaked and throw him off a cliff with super strength. You can knock over trees and other stuff on the NPK as well, lots of fun.

You can find tweaked configs, mods, maps etc. at inCrysis or Crymod. Check out the map "physis", just lots of stuff to demonstrate the physics of Cry Engine 2.0, but will allow you to figure out different and interesting ways to go about killing NPK soldiers.

I love it. I've had it for a while :shiftyeyes; but I asked for it for Christmas. Ordered it from the egg and hopefully it should be here tomorrow 😀

The last third of the game is arse. The tank level sucked until I realised you could do the level on foot without being penalised.

Best game I have played this year. Overshadows COD4, Halo 3, and Portal overall in many ways. Also one of the best single player campaigns I have played through.

 It's a great game, but the zero grav level made me motion sick and the carrier level is meh 🙁 The first half of the game more than make up for the last half's shortcomings though, IMO

One of the best games made. It just gets better as you go on.

Completely agree up until the mountain.

Hope this doesn't spoil it for OP, but the strength mod is the most amazing ability. Try it on some walls and you'll start getting a lot of ideas😉.

I also got it for Christmas. I'm entering the mine right now, and I'm having a great time so far. I love the cloak.

I found the final half to be even more compelling than the first.
so you found the completely linear, totally scripted and tons of cut scenes part of the game compelling? this game is total crap after the Core level and is simply go here, do this, cut scence and repeat. the first part of the game is great but how an adult can find anything compelling about the second part of the game is beyond me.

I like it so far as well, but I've got a nagging worry that there is going to be too many levels where it's just me vs some koreans. Enough with the koreans already... can we talk about those giant aliens flying by?

Anyway, here's a question... is 18-20 fps at medium considered decent?? I've got an athlon X2, 2gb of ram, and an 8800GT 512mb. I feel like I'm doing something wrong here... surely it shouldn't be dipping to 10-15 fps at times and generally hovering at 20, should it?

What speed is that X2? Im on a 6750, 2gb pc 6400 ram and an 8800gt with the dx10 XP tweak with everything high at 1400x900 and it runs fine for me. Then again mine may run around 20-25 fps but I still find it playable

The first sentence sums up COD4. In fact the later part of the game was almost exactly like some sci fi version of COD4. I personally didn't like it much compared with the first half.

Some parts of COD4 were so scripted that you could even see the enemies coming out of some spawnpoint behind a wall.

Yes that normal. Are you running in DX9 or DX10 ?

I'm running on a opteron 165 2.8 ghz, 2gb, and 8800gt. I get 25-40 fps with all settings dx9 high at 1280x1024. That sort of fps seems a bit low.

that sounds about right. I used an 8800gt and 5000 X2 and got 28.63 fps in the gpu benchmark at 1280x1024 and all high settings in DX10.
