Everyone, if you're playing the Crysis beta, please post your rig specs and your graphics detail configuration and resolution. Personally, I'm not playing it but I'd really like some reference as to how this game performs. Thanks! :)

Has the NDA been lifted? I'll get back to you once it has been. ;)

If they have an NDA it's because they either need to 'pare down' the game so it's playable on high-end systems, or else they're having technical issues.

My guess is the former option. Crysis is an elite developer IMO. Far Cry established them as being in the same league as Carmack (if not better).

They may have been expecting more competition and development in the GPU arena than has actually occured. They probably need to seriously pare down the game to compensate. GPUs have not gotten any faster over the past year which is disappointing (they usually double in speed).

Uh, I'm going to have to disagree on this point. Far Cry was good, but it hasn't changed the industry, like some of the games that Carmack has put out.

Are you telling me that you think Doom 3 is a better game than Far Cry? Do you think it even has better graphics? What has Carmack produced since then that has better graphics?

To be honest, the guy has disappointed me since Quake 3 (which is one of my all time favorite games).

You have the right to your opinion.

I do think he's an OpenGL genius. That doesn't mean that his engines are the be-all and end-all. People were simply able to do more in DX9 in the same timeframe. HL2 comes to mind as well.

He went on unmatched in the Quake/Quake 2/Quake 3 days. It seems that the industry has caught up to his way of thinking (API aside - he's very smart to use OpenGL, and it's extremely impressive that he can do what he does without the developer tools that the DX guys have access to).

The league that Carmack is in takes more than 1 decent game. Try inventing a genre from the ground up.

Edit: Oh and I do think Id Software has lost their way a bit. Doom3 wasn't bad, I don't think Rage will be bad either. But they don't seem to get it. They can't seem to decide what type of game they want to make. They've been bitching about how they wanted to do a new IP for ages, and then Rage is their answer, even though it is just as dark as all the previous games. Doom3 wasn't like Doom1 or Doom2. It wasn't bad, but it missed what it was supposed to be a sequel of. So yea, some faults there, I feel let down because they've never given me a true sequel to Quake 1. But that doesn't mean any random developer is on par now.

What Mana said: it takes more than cool graphics to get into Carmack's league. Even if he retires to Costa Rica and never makes another game he still will have had more impact on the industry than anyone else.

What does either of those things have to do with NDA's? NDA's are almost always used on betas to encourage testers to keep quiet, so that the company can get the product into shape without the glare of public attention.

Actually, pretty much every beta has a NDA, whether it runs well or not. They don't do it jsut to cover up technical issues or performance, they don't want people leaking content or anything until it's all final.

Yup. People claiming it has an NDA because of technical issues or graphics being shitty or whatever really need to be in more betas. 90% of them have NDAs now.

Agreed, I don't remember the last time I beta'd something that didn't have an NDA.

Ummm. There was an NDA on it when I joined

Later when they made it open beta the NDA magically disappeared.

From what I understand, Crysis is fairly CPU-dependent at the higher detail levels. Also, while there hasn't been a hefty leap in video HW for the past year, high-end 8800 cards have been fairly under utlized for a lot of that time. My GTX is a great DX9c card, but it really started to shine with Bioshock and CoH. When Crytech says that Crysis will run very well on a quad and a 8800GTX I believe them. We'll see.

*Cough* Q6600 + 8800GTX + 4GB Ram = 40-70fps avg. *Cough* - Highest *cough* settings.. available, ~1280x1024.

Best MP game, ever! Well.. if Armed Assault didn't have 100,000,000 hackers and supported Vista, ArmA is impossible to beat. But since ArmA's got a million hackers, and a sleepy development team, its Crysis all the way.
