BTC Guild is still down. 48 hours now.

They are switching to a "DDOS Hardened ISP" and "expect to be up late this evening".

What is the best pool to join right now?

Probably more ddos attacks, easy thing to do is register at a bunch of pools ahead of time, that way it's easy to switch. Then just install remote control software on your PC and remote in to change the pool from work.

Perhaps I was not clear.
I meant to ask how do work load ( Number Crunching)
Helping any body in real life.
For example like Forcast Model ?

Well if you're looking for a meaning like SETI looks for signs of extraterrestrial life, then

the hashes that we compute help to verify transactions on the network. That's it. Nothing altruistic, nothing not related to bitcoin. We are just making sure that the coins that got sent from person A to person B were actually sent from person A to person B.

Yea I wanted to see from SETI prespective.
Now what you said. Sound like we are doing Whole lot of Nothing ?

I haven't had any problems with Slushs pool today. Although lately I feel like i'm the only one in that pool. It never seems to get mentioned.

slush is ok. but being one of the middle to smaller pools in the past means that it gets less processing power. whenever slush gets a bunch of 4hr solve blocks the return rate drops quite a bit.

i'm beginning to wonder if kicking the botnet miner had a real affect on total comp power. the slight down trend seems to be holding. or else the difficulty + coin rate is just making people reevaluate how much run time they are willing to burn.

I don't know whats going on with slush's the last two days.
I'm down to ~0.012 AVG from ~0.025 with 1GHash/s mining power. Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

welcome to the new difficulty level.

edit: looks like everyone is running around like chickens with the head cut off. they're jumping around from 1 pool to the next and screwing up the share ratios.

the ddos is cyclical. slush and deep got hit 3 weeks ago. they took the necessary actions to fix with whitelists. guild didnt seem to get the message and left their system the same. whoever waits for the ddos to hit rather than doing some preemptive security is going to get hit next.

forming a pool isnt that hard, but the backend payout system is probably the real pain.

I'm finally going to withdraw some funds from dwolla from BTC sales and I noticed it's asking for my PIN. Is that some sort of dwolla pin setup when first registering the account? I can't imagine it would be asking for my debit PIN as that would be crazy but I can't remember setting up a different pin when I first opened the account.
