I'm not sure what that means or how it happens either. My GUIMiner shows 608 accepted, 4 stale/invalid. Deepbit.net shows .76% of my work as stale. I think it's normal, but I'm not 100% sure.

Just out of curiosity, why is this an AMD only game?

You can mine bitcoin using nvidia cards if you want to, but they generally don't perform on the same level as their AMD counterparts. This is due to AMD's graphics architecture which is better at this particular type of task.

Which is somewhat ironic considering how Nvidia is pushing GPGPU and how far ahead they are in that area. This task just happens to run better on AMD, though. Both architectures have their strengths and weaknesses.

The big difference is nvidia uses fewer, high clockspeed, complex units vs. amds many, slightly lower clockspeed, simpler units.

It just happens that AMD's choice is favored for hashing.

Ok so I set up the guiminer, set the client path, username and password and launched the "bitcoin client as a server" yada yada, and now I'm waiting for all the blocks to be downloaded.

My confusion is about how do I know when said blocks are downloaded.

This guide says there's a link I can check to see when it's done - the one with just the 6 digit number on it, but so far, after about half an hour, the number remains unchanged.

So, uh, what am I missing here?

I mean, not what am I missing, because I'm probably missing a ton of things since I have no idea what I'm doing, but what's the foremost thing that I'm missing would be the foremost appropriate thing to ask.

I wouldn't with a 4000-series card. I was a bit bummed when I realized I gave away a 4870 and I could have used it for this, but then I looked at how many MHashes it can do, and it wasn't really that much. So for the amount of power combined with the return... it probably won't be that great :\.

Stale shares are mostly a result of the server changing blocks, and thus the work you are doing becomes stale. If you are connected to a pool with long polling, you can look at the hash window (assuming you are using the command line version of most miners) and you will see stale shares around the time the pool changes blocks. Less than 1% over the long run is perfectly normal and fine.

Invalid shares are different. They are a result of your graphics card being unstable. Sadly you can't differentiate between Invalid/Stale easily. The best way is to open up the command line and look at where the stale/invalid shares are. If they stale/invalid shares are around block changes, your card is stable. If you have invalid shares regularly in the middle of blocks, you may want to adjust your overclocks. Either way, 1% or less is completely fine and normal.

You don't really need to worry about any of that unless you are solo mining. You do not set your client as a server or anything. The only use of the client is to give you your wallet.

You just need to pick a pool, and setup an account on that pool. You just need your receiving address from your bitcoin client. Then you point guiminer at the pool and start mining.

I must say, between trading and tweaking my cards (now at 900 mhz core, 335 ram, 1.060v -> 281 Mhash) I'm seriously getting a great entertainment value per dollar out of this bitcoin game.

Switched to mining namecoins, made about 3 bitcoins in 3 days even after difficulty switch. Now it's back to picking bitpennies off the ground.

It's just like playing eve online markets in RL. Except here when I get filthy rich there will be a few $ to buy my wife flowers for putting up with my gaming obsession.

If you change server to "other" you can enter whatever server name and port you want.

Yup, it's Saturday night, and this is normally the time I get to spend as long as I want playing whatever game I want. Which is why I have the rig. Instead here I am mining, looking for deals on hardware, and watching the market.

Im not sure what I find more entertaining. If prices hold or rise, Ive done pretty well so far even after just a week.
