I remember as a kid, the gas stations would have "Gas Wars" and they would keep dropping the price bit by bit trying to lure in the most customers...I remember seeing leaded regular for about 16 cents/gallon...in the early 70's, (just before the Arab oil embargo) leaded regular was about 30 cents/gallon, but after the embargo...all hell broke lose. Prices rocketed to the mid 50 cent range...everyone started crying about how they were gonna go bankrupt over the increases, (and probably many did) there were long lines at gas stations, gas rationing, (based on the last digit on your license plate) and even stations closed because they were out of gas...
