Crutchfield can go suck one

I don't think I've ever been as pissed off as I was earlier today. According to Crutchfield's catalog, the Infinity Reference 692i's would fit perfectly in the 6x9 slots I have in the back of my car. It also says on their website it is an E-Z fit, meaning:

The green icon beside a speaker listing means the speakers fit your factory mounting locations without permanent modifications to your vehicle.

So I take it it'll be a simple pop and drop install right? Let's just say no. Removal of the old speakers was a breeze. Then I tried fitting the new ones into the brackets that hold the speakers - not even close to fitting. I break out the drill, pop in a sander bit, sand away as much on these two tiny spots as I possibly could - still no go. The only way it will fit is if I bend part of the black speaker metal part on the back surrounding the cone with a hammer and chisel, which I'd rather not do with a brand new set of speakers, but I do it anyway just because that's the only way it'll fit. After banging on it for 10 minutes it finally fits, but the holes don't all line up. Gee this is great!! End up forcing it to fit, then screw on the grilles and attempt to put back the bracket back on the car - won't go because the place where I had to bend the speakers is bending part of the bracket, which screws up the lining up with the hole. Take everything off, hammer it again, put everything back together, finally fits in. Fire up the old stereo - great clarity and bass, except for this horrible rattling. Go look - at about 4 different spots the black metal parts (I don't know what it's called but the same black metal thing I had to bend earlier) is touching the metal part of the car, which is causing that horrible rattling. In order to get it to stop rattling I'd have to hammer out a nice little indention at each of those 4 parts on a set of brand new speakers, of which now I can't return and get a shallower set because I had to fvcking hammer part of it. By this time 2 hours had passed so I just gave up.

Bastards. If I had ordered these fvcking speakers from them I would b1tch them out like no other, but unfortunately I can't because I didn't. That's the last time I ever fvcking trust anything I see or read at Crotchfield :|

that really sucks. I've had nothing but great experiences with crutchfield. I'll still continue to do business with them. I've been pleased every transaction.

Breathe......

I know what it's like hammering/cutting shyt up in a car just for new hardware. It's one of the most frustrating things i've ever had to help my brother out with.

Yep, I had a similar problem to this. :| I got some Pioneer 5 by 7's in the front which the Crutchfield guy said it would be really easy to install.......yea right. So when I get my door off and take the old ones off, I tried to fit the new Pioneer speaker in and it wouldn't fit. So I was like WTF?! :| So I had to do some of my own modding, I bent and cut 2 of the clips on the side of each speaker and drilled new holes in the metal where they were supposed to be. I hope that didn't affect anything, they sound great.

That's perfect! haha, Crutchfield goes through all this trouble - and expense - to create a stereo and speaker replacement guide for their [paying] customers. You helped yourself to their guide, and in return, you purchased your speakers elsewhere...and you got burned. LOVE IT! I hope your rear deck is all fvcked up. HAHAHAHHAH!

BTW, just because it says "EZ Fit" does NOT mean that some type of custom adapter or mounting kit isn't necessary to obtain that "EZ Fit", which Crutchfield will gladly supply you with...provided that you ordered your speakers from them.

But it is true. Curtchfield probably supplied adapters for the speakers to fit.

Should have called them, maybe they forgot and adapter? If not I think they would have made it right for you and worth the trouble. I've had nothing but great experiences with them. They cost a little more but really provide excellent service

If you thought that was bad, don't try installing an AFM powerpipe on your car... It involves tin snips and a big griding wheel under your hood.

For the rattling, why didn't you just put a few small pieces of dynamat where the metal is touching? Would have cost you all of $5 and installed in about 30 seconds.

notfred - you mean that huge hole you had to drill (on your pictures page)? That I don't mind doing - helped a friend make a custom air intake for his Integra - doing anything that involves work I don't mind, just not when someone says otherwise

Oh and btw tscenter:

Types of installations
After you identify your vehicle on our Vehicle Selector and select the mounting location, you'll see which speakers fit your car. Speakers labelled "E-Z" will fit in the factory speaker openings and use the factory grilles and brackets. The magnet fits the available space and the tweeters won't interfere with your grilles.

Other sizes ? labelled "P" ? fit with the aid of an adapter (free with speaker purchase), or with minor modifications (such as drilling new screw holes, cutting a small area of metal or pressboard, or filing cardboard or plastic to make room for a speaker that is larger than the factory opening).

When you install your new speakers, you'll have a set of free instructions specific to your vehicle, as well as free Crutchfield speaker wiring harnesses (when available), which eliminate the need for splicing.

Specifically says it'll drop right in, just like the customer service guy I talked to said it would without special adapters or brackets :p

One car installer guy I talked to said that the crutchfield guide is wrong for certain cars.

That's a good idea - just that where the metal is touching is like pressed together, err really really tight - think that would help?

Dude, that's just messed up.
What's even more messed up is that he's is misplacing blame on Crutchfield, when he's really angry at himself for trying to save a couple bucks.

I have to ask, do you think he got his money's worth?

An adapter and custom mounting hardware are generally two different things. I've bought several "EZ Fit" speaker applications that came with a custom HARDWARE MOUNTING kit for my application, not an 'adapter'.

Using the mounting kit supplied by Crutchfield, they indeed "fit in the factory speaker openings" and used "the factory grilles and brackets."

Yes. Dynamat is specifically designed for that kind of thing. I'm assuming you mean that part of the speaker is hitting the metal frame of the car, so you can pull up the speaker, put the Dynamat down, and put the speaker back. Don't worry about putting it over screw holes, just screw right down through the mat. It's a rubber-like thing with a sticky side so it sticks where you put it. Anytime I do a car stereo install I put Dynamat anywhere the metal speaker touches the frame (I put an O around the edge of the hole). It seems to help a little bit, and I've never had any problem with vibration (11 system installs and rising). It even solved one problem I was having with speaker vibration in an old Prelude I was installing in.

Oh and don't worry about the Dynamat being compressed, it's meant to be squished between a speaker and a frame and pressed to 1/10 it's original thickness. It will still stop the vibrations.

They sell it at Best Buy and I'm sure any respectable audio place has it too. Don't bother getting the large square, the small one will work for you. The small square is about $5-$7. The large is about $10-$12.

Were they top mount or bottom mount 6x9's? It would really suck if they were bottom mounts and you tried to top mount them and that's why they didn't fit.

I would've just returned the speakers when I found they wouldn't fit. :p

RagingBitch:

Sorry for taking delight in your troubles. Let me explain...

When I owned a computer business, I spent probably 1000 uncompensated hours of my time advising people, answering their questions, making recommendations, solving their problems, going the extra mile for their business, etc. and they would return the favor by making their purchase elsewhere because "it was cheaper"...as though I were running a non-profit public advocate organization or something. They would even tell me, "I really want to thank you for all your help, I would have purchased from you since you went out of your way for me like you did, but I can't say no to a better deal when I find it, you know?"

Do you think these companies who had the "cheaper price" would give them the time of day to help them with their questions? Not a chance. Many of them had the G-D nerve to call me BACK a couple weeks or months later wanting ME to help them with their purchase because they couldn't get any help from the "cheaper" place they bought if from!! WTF?

So I really rejoice when I see people get their money's worth.

Hey tscenter - no I totally see your point. I apologize about the things I said earlier in the thread. I've ordered an AIWA mp3 head unit (the CDC-MP3 - the one that was backstocked for 6 months) and a set of speakers from them before - the speakers said EZ Fit, didn't need any additional stuff, so I assumed based off what the guy told me on the phone and what I got off the website it wouldn't need any additional work - that's why I figured I'd save myself the $45 and order it elsewhere. I was wrong this time of course :(

werk - they're top mount. And I hate returning stuff - just lazy :D

Good, we can call off the lynch mob now :)
I've been dealing with Crutchfield for over 10 years and never had a problem, and have also recommended them to family & friends who've also been satisfied. I understand the temptation to go for the lower price, and I do that myself sometimes, but you have no call to blame anyone but yourself if the cut-rate vendor you bought from didn't include a proper install kit like Crutchfield would have.
