I don't think I've ever been as pissed off as I was earlier today. According to Crutchfield's catalog, the Infinity Reference 692i's would fit perfectly in the 6x9 slots I have in the back of my car. It also says on their website it is an E-Z fit, meaning:
The green icon beside a speaker listing means the speakers fit your factory mounting locations without permanent modifications to your vehicle.
So I take it it'll be a simple pop and drop install right? Let's just say no. Removal of the old speakers was a breeze. Then I tried fitting the new ones into the brackets that hold the speakers - not even close to fitting. I break out the drill, pop in a sander bit, sand away as much on these two tiny spots as I possibly could - still no go. The only way it will fit is if I bend part of the black speaker metal part on the back surrounding the cone with a hammer and chisel, which I'd rather not do with a brand new set of speakers, but I do it anyway just because that's the only way it'll fit. After banging on it for 10 minutes it finally fits, but the holes don't all line up. Gee this is great!! End up forcing it to fit, then screw on the grilles and attempt to put back the bracket back on the car - won't go because the place where I had to bend the speakers is bending part of the bracket, which screws up the lining up with the hole. Take everything off, hammer it again, put everything back together, finally fits in. Fire up the old stereo - great clarity and bass, except for this horrible rattling. Go look - at about 4 different spots the black metal parts (I don't know what it's called but the same black metal thing I had to bend earlier) is touching the metal part of the car, which is causing that horrible rattling. In order to get it to stop rattling I'd have to hammer out a nice little indention at each of those 4 parts on a set of brand new speakers, of which now I can't return and get a shallower set because I had to fvcking hammer part of it. By this time 2 hours had passed so I just gave up.
Bastards. If I had ordered these fvcking speakers from them I would b1tch them out like no other, but unfortunately I can't because I didn't. That's the last time I ever fvcking trust anything I see or read at Crotchfield :|
