Crushing core

What exactly is crushing a core? A friend gave me his gig t-bird that he said he fried. I tried it on two boards, no post. There's little tiny corner pieces missing off the edge of the core on 3 corners. Is this "crushing"? Looking at the chip, the pencil trick looks like it has lead from the L1 to L3. Would this cook it?

Any suggestions?
 
Yes, the chips from the edges of the corte are what is considered "crushing the core". It normally happens when a HSF is put on slightly wrong and it causes the corners of the core to break off. You'll normally hear it make a crunching noise when you do it.

It doesn't take much of a chip off the edge to make the processor inoperable. And as far as I have heard, there is no fix for it.
 
My 1.2ghz cpu is chipped on one of the corners but it runs @ 1.45ghz. So far very stable and no problems. I might have chipped it when I uninstalled the Taisol heatsink. It took me forever to uninstall it. I almost had an OVERCLOCKING RAGE!!! 🙂
 
Hmm that sounds really strange flexer1. I have never heard of anything like that before.

Has anybody else heard of anything like this?
 
Man this chip is FAST. Faster than a dual P3-700 @ 1024mhz I used to have (I sold it 🙂 ). I'm an AMD fan now. I can't wait for Palominos! Bye bye Intel...
