Crushed glass to sharpen garbage disposal?

Garbage disposal "blades" are not sharp at all really...as someone else said. They simply pulverize the food by spinning so quickly.

Different models can handle different things...I upgraded my pos old badger model with a much larger and three times the HP model, and it actually says in the manual things like bones are fine...

That being said, I rarely put much down there...

Also, one person mentioned coffee grounds....BAD IDEA. Coffee grounds have a tendency to solidify inside the pipe further down and clog it...

seeing as how you can replace one for about $100, i say put anything you want down there that isn't going to be bad for the pipes themselves, and if it breaks or wears out eventually, just replace it. i'd draw the line at bones, though i know people that have been putting bones down their's for years without problems...

but sharpening sounds like a bad idea no matter how you're going to try it. if it doesn't work, just replace it.

When I was shopping for one, the most common units that were designed for an average household were as low as $50...
