Crushed glass to sharpen garbage disposal?

A lady I know told me to throw some glass and lemon in there to sharpen the blades. Sounds insane to me...

who is right?

I've always heard to use ice. If you use glass, you might want to wear some safety goggles.

I just don't think it would sharpen it, rather I think it would damage it.

uh...sound like that would dull the blades, not sharpen them. of course, i know nothing about garbage disposals though.

Yes hitting small rocks (essentially) with a blade will make it sharper. Go outside with an axe and find agravel road, hack at it for a while and your axe will be *SOOO* much sharper.

I assumed it would be a bad idea but tons of sites are saying no glass in the disposal.

Vinegar ice cubes and orange peels will keep them clean and fresh.

i wouldnt worry about sharpening the blades. i would worry more about what your putting in your drain.
the worst clogs have been from pasta and rice being dumped into them from what ive seen. anything that swells in water dont put down it.

most are retrofitted into homes with older pipes, garbage disposals are one of the most common calls for drain blockages, i just wouldnt put anything in there that i wouldnt put down my bathroom sink.

sounds dangerous. you don't sharpen em. you toss ice and or old coffee grounds which is just pure fiber down there. helps clean the gunk out

I use ice in my disposal but not to sharpen it. Instead, it's to clean it.

Why does it need sharpening? You shouldn't need to put anything down your garbage disposal that is going to require sharp blades to chop it up finer. Put vegetable trimmings, etc in your garbage can, or better yet make compost with it.

About the only things I put down it are egg shells.

I do the orange/lemon peels and ice, seems to work well at freshening it up.

Garbage disposal drains are not that sharp to begin with.. they're more like thick pieces of metal that move fast to crush soft food. There's no point in sharpening them.. if anything, I'd say water and food is the best way to lubricate it.

ive been on hundreds of calls over the years for clogged pipes from disposals, potato peels will clog the disposal unit faster sure but once it makes its way into the pipes its always been rice or pasta that clog the most. i was the one pulling the traps off and snaking them.
ive pulled rice out of drains that looked like it was huge maggots it had swollen so large.
i have no scientific evidence for my claims, i just am saying what i have experienced.

I use my garbage disposal to dispose of garbage. I put just about anything down there. I don't want any food or smell bad stuff in the garbage.
