Curious how any of you make your money in this game.

I've only started out as a small duchy or noble and have worked my way up to ruling a kingdom several times.

It seems a bit too easy, but I find it difficult to get past making 10 credits per month...

Problem #1, you are not the best holder for anything but a holding/castle

Start holding cities/bishopries, and they reduce the credit value.

Once I start conquering more areas, I actually find my credits per month DROPPING...usually because I end up with all the land holding titles. SO I divy them out, wash rinse repeat.

Anyway

How do you guys make money :)

I haven't had much luck amassing great wealth either.
Tax payments from your vassals is linked to their opinion right? For starters I usually try to make the richest ones like me more, if it's low. Other things I think is basic strategy is lower levies/raise taxes on city and churches. They don't provide many men anyway.

Assassinate (through plots not with money) vassal lines until you inherit their lands. You'll get all their money as well. There's certain types of imprisoned people you can banish without penalty and get all their gold that way (I don't remember who (wandering heroes?)). Ranson prisoners. Also, if you're pagan you can loot neighbors/coasts(if vikings). Winning certain types of wars will get you money as well.

As you expand your income should be increasing. Investing in castle towns and whatnot can be good for long-term income. I usually set a small fuedal tax as well, but my rulers are usually diplo focused so they can take the hit.

Things to note:

- You have a demense limit. As you note, once you start taking counties and surpass that limit than you will take a big penalty to all your taxes.
- Conquering territory has its own pitfalls. You'll generally take on vassals that hate you and conquering reduces taxes and levies for a period of time.
- If vassals hate you, they don't give you all the taxes and levies that they could. So get your vassals to like you or get rid of them.
- If a bishop likes the Pope more than you then you get no taxes from his holding. This is where the "Increase Religious Relations" action on your Chaplain can be used to good effect.
- Build economic structures that increase your tax rates.

.

don't you have to have "Free investiture" to get this regardless of how much they like you?

Prioritize stewardship on you, your wife and your heir. Take ownership of the biggest counties. Don't waste demesne on counties with only 2-3 holdings. Give cities and bishoprics to "content" people.

Tax cities at max. It's almost always better to tax mayors more and take the opinion hit. Reduce the levy in cities to offset the opinion hit a bit.

I just started doing this and it made a HUGE difference. I am pulling in twice as much gold per month :)
