Cruncher down

Well, I went out Friday night, and came home to my computer trying to reboot itself every 30 seconds.
Right before it gets to XP loading, it crashes, and attempts to reboot.
So, this could suddenly be a corrupted OS (have hardware and software firewall and anti-virus) or a hardware issue. I looked at the harware monitor, and my CPU temp was at 160F!! I have/had an older athlon 1.333g on a what was stable ECS board.
So, is it my motherboard and processor that have finally taken a crap, or is it a corrupted OS? I'm going to look into a new motherboard/cpu combo today since not having a computer at home is killing me.

Have you checked your hs/f to make sure it is working correctly and doesn't need cleaning. A fresh coat of themal paste couldn't hurt either.

Would be my first idea as well. Maybe somebody was in your room/house and bumped against the PC case and thus the HS got dislocated. To really know if it's only the heat, just open the case and take ahoushold fan and let it blow right on the CPU/mobo and see what happens. And you wanna make that pretty soon, as AMD XPs do not have an integrated shutdown thingy like the Intels have, so you can actually fry that one completly!

Just went ahead and ordered an Athlon 64 2800+ with a new mobo, and 512Mb PC3200.
Hopefully I will have it up and crunching by this weekend. I expect to see a nice increase in my daily output going from a 1.33g to the A64.

atta-boy 🙂

who needs trouble-shooting!

160 F...what is that in Celcius? It might not be too much off the "normal" temp of the old 1.2/1.3's...my 1.2 ran about 55-65C full load w/ the stock hsf combo..

I don't remember what it was in C. I took the HS off, and the thermal paste left a nice black square on the bottom of the HS. After messing around, I found out that one of my sticks of memory took a dump, and that my video card also took a dump, so it was a good excuse to upgrade.
Oh, and the cpu temp after some cleaning and new paste is at a nice cool 31C. Forgot to mention that the fan I had on the HS also took a dump. Nothing like everything crapping out at the same time....
