Cruncher down, call 911

Wife called me at work this afternoon, said she couldn't log on, she logged out, but then it started rebooting all the time. I had her shut it down until I could get home. 🙁

Seems the C drive is going bad, with some major unrepairable system files corrupted, the system won't start. I've tried some repairs, but nothing's worked so far. 🙁

So I booted up using a Live CD, copied what important data I had to have to my D drive. Plus I have a fairly recent backup so no real data loss. Whew.

My main PC is sort of out of commission until I get a new hard drive and re-install windows, which means my SOB stats are going to drop. 🙁

I was planning an upgrade to Windows XP. If the wife didn't have to use the PC as well, I'd just go ahead and install Ubuntu, I'm running on the Live CD version of it now. Seems to have recognized most everything important except the printer. It recognizes it, but when I go to print, it locks up.

Oh well, it could have been worse! 🙂

Ouch - at least it wasn't hardware failure! What a pain all the same.

Best of luck sitting through all the installs. I tend to get thirsty.

You have my sincere sympathy, RaySun2Be. Although there was "no real data loss" it still is a pain.

In my experience it is the PSUs (6 during the past 2 - 3 years) and HDDs (4 during the past 2 years) which fail the most, but just recently I have have had two CPU-failures. But those were OC'ed AMD Athlon XP (more than 5 years of 24/7 service @ 20% overclock).
The hard part was to find inexpensive replacements - it took two whole days to get them (for approx USD 10/each) 😉

I wish you (or rather the computer) a speedy recovery. 🙂

That's not good news for ya. Will take some $$$ to fix it. 🙁
If we weren't so far apart, I could send you a HDU, I have a few lying around here. But I guess, the shipping and handling from The Netherlands would cost far more than the HDU's are worth. 😉

Glad you were able to get the important data, though. It should remind us all of making regular backups. We all do that, don't we??? The same as you do. 😉

I'll try to keep your SoB output up a bit, but can't give you any garantees. 🙂

Good luck with repairing the stuff.

Peter.

HDUs??

Ray

Hope it doesn't cost you too much to fix it!..............make sure you whack the old HDD with ya cane😉, revenge is a dish best served 'whacked' 😀

Definitely fubared. Tried recovering the hive, didn't work. Running a Live CD of Ubuntu, even tried installing the SOB Linux client on it, but can't seem to get it to work. 🙁

can't get to DOS, but I can get to a Recovery Console (Windows 2000)

Anyone with experience installing the SOB client in linux that could lend a hand? Or even help running the Windows client in WINE?
