Cruise Ship 1, Dock 0

This is what happens when folks don't know their ropes!

So if you're wondering if it's safe to sit on those big bollards (the things the ropes go around), don't! There could be TONS of pull at any given moment and a sudden gust of wind and you're suddenly moving and NOT having a spectacular day. Even if it's subtle and turns over you could find yourself pinned under a slab of iron weighing tons. 😱

I just noticed something, the dock is still around, just a bit roughed up. But the cruiseship is gone! Dock won!

Actually the ship is still in the picture, she just moved.
This was not a departure incident but rather weather related.
The wind increased rapidly, it was a beam blow (wind smacking the ship broadside) that increased the pull substantially. There was too much slack in the lines and the ship left the pier with gangways plunging into the sea!

The mooring operators activated the winches to pull her back but instead of the ship returning to shore the bollards ripped out taking about 15 meters of pier with them! Oops!

Glad it was not us/me!

We've have a few close calls though involving similar things. The vessel pictured is smaller than we are - by approx 24,000 tons IIRC.

I know with a 70mph beam blow our pull is about three quarter million pounds. All just from the wind! 😱

So is that a boat in the background of the picture? Because it looks like a freaking apartment building. I have never seen a boat that looks like that before. Yeah it's probably a stupid question but I stared at that picture for a good 30 seconds searching for a boat before I realized the apartment building was the boat (I think).

Edit: Haha damn the website for the costa deliziosa is awesome. Webcams at the bow and stern and a longitude latitude. I now know that the ship is in port in Lisboa, Portugal

There is no boat in that picture. A ship, yes but no boat. 😉

I can see why some would be confused in the OP pic though - 1) The aft view is cropped, and 2) Classic Fincantieri styling. D: (although her overall lines and topside are actually much better)

Wiki

From 28 December 2011, Costa Deliziosa will embark on a 100-day round-the-world cruise.[9] Departing from Savona, the ship will visit the Caribbean, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, before returning to Italy.[9]

Cheapest ticket for the 2011 world cruise is $16,235. :\

It's not all THAT big when compared to some modern cruise ships. Both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian have a few boats that are bigger than that one.
