crucial ram not overclocking worth crap

PC2100, matched set bought at worst buy a couple weeks ago. I give up, unless I really crank up Vdimm, I can't even run aggressive timings at spec speed without hangs/crashes. I am running dual ddr tho, so maybe that makes it harder to do. I need to buy some faster ram.

Have you tried Expert yet? I have a pair of Crucial PC2100 from various points in history and they both do PC2700 together in a KT333 board. SFang had his up to PC3200 speeds in an A7N8X-Deluxe. If you didn't read this thread already, it may give you some ideas.

(also, is that running on a fairly substantial power supply?)

Still being stubborn. 🙁

Quick rundown, can run 2-2-2-5, 133 MHz at 2.63 Vdimm and 2-2-2-5, 140 MHz at 2.9 Vdimm

The thing is, many other more aggressive configurations appear stable, but when I run prime95 it returns errors. Those two configurations I've run overnite so they are good.

Also, isn't 2.9 Vdimm too high for long term use?

Depends really, your CPU and PSU may be undervolting, so even though its set at 2.9V the rail may be delivering less than spec. Check your 3.3V rail readings as well as your Vdimm before and during load. That should tell you rather quickly weather your mobo is undervolting (idle) or whether your PSU is insufficient (load).

FWIW I was able to run Crucial PC2100 at 147 at Cas 2-2-2-5, but that was on the 8KHA+, a board known to deliver spec'd power to the CPU and memory, but usually overvolted a bit. I bought my PC2100 over a year and a half ago though, so quality may have degraded since then. ($30 per 256MB delivered :Q ).

I know that some of you are getting decent results, but Crucial IMO has never been known for its overclocking abilities. Samsung (REAL Samsung), Corsair, Mushkin, Geil, and OCZ are better-known for this. I personally wouldn't buy Crucial RAM expecting it to O/C very well.

Heh, well once upon a time RAM didn't wear ARMOR and have all these cool names and fancy stepping codes and timings. There was Crucial, generic garbage, and the premium makers that used Micron chips anyways (Mushkin, Corsair). Crucial did quite well back then 🙂

What rev. are the chips on the modules? If they are A's you should RMA them.

How do I find out? Is there any reason why the A's are bad?

I guess those are B's. I think the rev. is the letter farthest on the right on each chip. Can't remember for sure without seeing an actual chip again. I had a couple of sticks with A chips and they weren't solid at 133 with the absolute slowest timings. They sent me some B's when I RMA'd them and they were solid at 133 with the fastest timings but I didn't test higher. I used memtest86 to test, the A's were failing all over the place.
