Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2BAA 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) is on sale at Newegg.com for $549 shipped. Promo code CRUSSD57 gets an additional $40 off, for a out-the-door price of $509.

I have been monitoring the price on this drive recently, and this is the cheapest it has reached - cheap enough for me to bite. Cheapest before was $529 for a short period a couple of weeks ago.

It's nice to see Crucial drives repeatedly hitting the $1/gb mark lately. I hope the prices stay this way for a while.

I almost held out for one of these, but I instead jumped on a couple of 256gb m4's for $430 shipped at buy.com (right before newegg had them for $199 each...). I'm not worried about TRIM, even without it the 2x256gb is MUCH faster than 1x512 would be. My only concern was that I might want more space, but by the time I need more than 512gb of ssd goodness it will be time for me to upgrade, anyway.

Makes sense to me, but I am using this in a laptop. I look forward to the speed boost in any case. It's amazing to me that my MBP is in such great shape after almost 3 years that I am buying it a new battery and HD upgrade. Every other laptop I have ever owned has looked like a truck hit it after two years, but the unibody MBP design is just a beast and looks near-new.

Still not there yet. Need 256GB for $99. Unless my 120GB craps out then I'd be forced to buy another.

I'm missing something here. What is different about TRIM with 2x256GB vs. a single 512GB drive?

TRIM does not work with RAID. Two SSD drives in raid 0 is fast enough to make you not give a shit though.

Do these Crucial M4's have to be trimmed with a Crucial application like my Intel 320?
Or do these drives trim themselves regardless of OS?

I'm really not understanding if the OS trims the drive, the firmware in the drive itself, or if you have to run a specific application?

I have no idea except I asked the forum for Windows 7 and was told it's automatic.
