Crucial BX100 Vs 2.5" Samsung 850 Evo (Power Consumption)

Hey Guys,

Does anyone have any knowledge if the BX100 is significantly better from a power consumption point of view than the 2.5" 850 EVO?

I can't seem to find many reviews that compare the power consumption of the drives directly. This review seems to indicate that at idle the bx100 is using more power than the 850 evo and the iometer score has the bx100 using marginally less power than the 850 evo ---> http://techreport.com/review/27824/crucial-bx100-and-mx200-solid-state-drives-reviewed/5

This has got several benchmarks that include power consumption under load and at idle.

Based on Anandtech Bench data, BX100 vs 850 EVO 500GB, total power consumed to complete test.

Destroyer Bench:
BX 100 - 8.6Wh
850 EVO - 14.24Wh

Heavy Bench:
BX 100 - 0.87Wh
850 EVO - 1.11Wh

Light Bench:
BX 100 - 0.29Wh
850 EVO - 0.39Wh

Idle Power Consumption
BX 100 - 55mW
850 EVO - 33mW

To see how this info breaks down, let's see what the Light Bench means:
Total GB Read 17.97 GB
Total GB Written 23.25 GB

So the light bench alone looks more than enough to simulate a typical consumer load for an entire day/work session. To this we should add some idle time of say 4-6 hours.

In the Light bench BX 100 uses ~ 0.1Wh less than 850 EVO
During 4-6 hours of idle time BX uses ~ 0.1Wh more than 850EVO.
Total difference 0 Wh

Conclusion - when used in typical consumer loads the two SSDs will be indistinguishable from a power usage point of view.

PS: even with the Heavy test, which sports 50GB of reads and 100GB of writes, the difference for an entire work day would be ~ 0.1Wh between the two.

If, for some reason, both HIPM and DIPM are disabled, 850 EVO will have a slight advantage in idle power consumption.

Hey coercitiv, the 850 evo drive that you're comparing to the bx100 is a M.2 drive, would the power specs be similar for the 2.5" 850 evo sata drive?

You just found out a modern SSD consumes on average under 0.5Wh per day, that's around 1-2% of a typical laptop battery, and still what you're curious about is whether it might be 20% higher or lower that that...
